GT Advanced Technologies Inc., a technology company, produces materials and equipment for the global consumer electronics, power electronics, solar, and light emitting diode (LED) industries. Segments The company operates in three business segments: Sapphire, Polysilicon, and Photovoltaic (PV). Sapphire This segment markets and sells advanced sapphire crystallization furnaces (ASF) to customers serving the LED industry and certain other industrial markets. This segment produces sapphire material in the company’s Salem, Massachusetts facility and provides this material to customers for final fabrication and assembly into various optical and other industrial applications. The primary markets that the company is targeting comprise: Low Absorption Optical Sapphire (LAOS): LAOS is used in applications where minimal photon absorption is critical. The material is processed in specialized conditions to avoid absorption bands. The company could optimize its LAOS material to the precise wavelength for the application. LAOS is used for high power laser windows where photon absorption cannot be tolerated. Titanium-doped Sapphire (Ti:Sapphire): Utilizing a proprietary production technique, the company produces sapphire boules that are doped with titanium. Similar to its LAOS sapphire material, it provides precise finishing and polishing for its Ti:Sapphire material to meet customers' exact application requirements. In addition to selling ASF units and sapphire material, this segment also sells services designed to optimize customer production processes, as well as train their employees in the use of its equipment. The company sells replacement parts and certain consumables used in its ASF equipment units. Competition: The company’s competitors include Rubicon Technology, Inc.; Sapphire Technology Co. Ltd. (Korea); Kyocera International Inc.; Saint-Gobain; Gavish Inc.; and Monocrystal. Polysilicon This segment supplies polysilicon production equipment and services to various polysilicon manufacturers, including OCI Company, Ltd.; Samsung MEMC Polysilicon; and GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Limited. The company’s polysilicon business offers silicon deposition reactors (SDR), which utilizes the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. In addition, its polysilicon business sells hydrochlorination technology and equipment, which is utilized to convert silicon tetrachloride into trichlorosilane (TCS), which is used as seed material in the manufacture of high purity silicon. Finally, its polysilicon segment provides engineering services to customers. The company sells its polysilicon products and services to existing polysilicon producers and new market entrants. This segment focuses on product design, quality control, engineering services, project management and process development related to the production of polysilicon. This segment’s primary products are: SDR Reactors: The company offers SDR reactors and markets its seventh generation product. Its SDR reactors have consistently demonstrated production at levels equal or greater than their nameplate capacity. The company markets its SDR reactors under the names SDR300, SDR400, SDR500 and SDR600 and SDR1K. Hydrochlorination for the production of TCS and Silane: The company provides equipment, technology, and engineering services for the production and purification of trichlorosilane (TCS) and silane. This hydrochlorination technology eliminates the need for silicon tetrachloride converters, which are required when using certain other polysilicon production technology. It offers hydrochlorination technology, which is designed to lower the capital costs and power consumption of polysilicon production. Polysilicon Services, Parts and Other: The company also provides engineering services for the commissioning, start-up and optimization of its equipment and technology. It also provides ancillary equipment and technologies for producing seed rods used in its SDR reactors and for handling and processing the polysilicon rods into a finished product. Competition: The company’s competitors include MSA Apparatus Construction for Chemical Equipment Ltd; Centr
