Etablissements Delhaize Frères et Cie ‘Le Lion’ (Groupe Delhaize) Société Anonyme, together with its subsidiaries, operates food supermarkets. The company’s store network also includes other store formats, such as proximity stores, cash and carry and specialty stores. As of December 31, 2013, the company’s store network (which includes company-operated, affiliated and franchised stores) consisted of 3,534 stores. The company conducts its retail operations primarily through its businesses in the United States; Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg; and Greece, Romania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Bulgaria. United States The company engages in the operation of food supermarkets in the southeastern, mid-Atlantic and northeastern regions of the United States under the banners Food Lion, Hannaford and Bottom Dollar Food. Food Lion stores are located in 10 different states in the Southeast of the United States. Hannaford is located throughout New England and Bottom Dollar Food stores can be found in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania markets. As of December 31, 2013, the company operated 1,514 supermarkets in 18 states in the eastern United States, of which 154 stores held for sale. Assortment: The company’s U.S. supermarkets sell various groceries, produce, meats, dairy products, seafood, frozen food, deli/bakery products and non-food items, such as prescriptions, health and beauty care and other household and personal products. Its U.S. stores offer nationally and regionally advertised brand name merchandise, as well as products manufactured and packaged under private brands. Food Lion offers between 15,000 and 20,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) in their supermarkets, Hannaford between 25,000 and 46,000 SKUs and Bottom Dollar Food between 6,000 and 8,000 SKUs. Private Brand Products: Each of the company’s U.S. banners offers their own line of private brand products. As of December 31, 2013, Food Lion carried approximately 8.900 private brand SKUs, Hannaford approximately 8,200 private brand SKUs and Bottom Dollar Food offered approximately 2,500 SKUs under its private brand program. The company has a common three-tier private brand program in its U.S. operations, including a premium brand, a house brand and a value line, as well as category-specific private brand lines for organic products, general merchandise and prepared meals. The company offers My Essentials, a new value line of private brands. Loyalty Cards: Food Lion operates a customer loyalty card program, which is called the MVP card program, through which customers can benefit from additional savings. Pharmacies: As of December 31, 2013, there were 154 pharmacies in Hannaford stores and 29 in Food Lion stores. Competition: The major competitors of Food Lion are Wal-Mart, Kroger (including Harris Teeter), Bi-Lo, Lowes Food, Aldi, and Save-A-Lot. The major competitors of Hannaford are Supervalu (Shaws), Price Chopper, Wal-Mart, DeMoulas (Market Basket), Royal Ahold (Stop & Shop), and ShopRite. Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg The company’s store network consists of various banners, depending on the specialty, the store size and whether the store is company-operated, franchised or affiliated (that is, stores with a Delhaize banner that are operated by independent third parties to whom it sells its products at wholesale prices). The network included 383 supermarkets under the Delhaize Le Lion/Delhaize De Leeuw, AD Delhaize and Red Market banners, 338 proximity stores under the Proxy Delhaize and Shop ‘n Go banners, and 131 specialty stores operated under the Tom & Co banner. The company is also active in E-commerce. Supermarkets: As of December 31, 2013, there were 147 company-operated supermarkets under the Delhaize Le Lion/Delhaize De Leeuw banner and 224 affiliated supermarkets under the AD Delhaize banner in Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. 20 company-operated supermarkets were remodeled in 2013.
