NTT DOCOMO, Inc. provides mobile telecommunication services in Japan. Together with its 124 subsidiaries and 27 affiliates, the company conducts business as the NTT DOCOMO group. The company is a subsidiary of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation. Segments As of March 31, 2016, the company operated in three segments, including Telecommunications Business, Smart Life Business, and Other businesses. The Telecommunications Business includes those from mobile phone services (LTE (Xi) services and FOMA services), optical-fiber broadband service, satellite mobile communications services, international services and equipment sales related to these services. The Smart Life Business includes video and music distribution, electronic books and other services offered through its ‘dmarket’ portal, as well as finance/payment services, shopping services and various other services to support its customers’ daily lives. The Other businesses primarily includes ‘Mobile Device Protection Service,’ as well as the development, sale and maintenance of IT systems. Products The company purchases products from vendors and then sells them to mainly its sales agency who sells these products to its subscribers. As of March 31, 2016, the company introduced 18 smartphone models, 4 tablet models, 3 feature phone models and 1 data communication device models, and sold approximately 26.05 million units. Smartphones/Tablets: For the 2015-2016 winter/spring collections, the company launched the sales of smartphones featuring PREMIUM 4G and 4K-supported displays, allowing customers to enjoy photos and videos with higher resolution. In addition, the company expanded the lineup of devices to meet the needs of customers, including the latest models of the iPhone and iPad. Data Communications Devices The company offers a range of data communication devices for selection, depending on usage, including mobile Wi-Fi routers, USB data cards, and the like. It introduced one mobile Wi-Fi router as a part of its 2015-2016 winter/spring collection, that have built-in LTE-Advanced capability, a technology that supports download speeds of up to 300Mbps. In addition, its communication modules could be used in various situations in everyday life and business situations, such as for managing taxi and bus operations, monitoring and controlling power and gas facility devices, distributing contents to information posting systems, managing inventory for vending machines and managing payment with mobile devices. Other Communications Devices For the 2015 summer collections, in addition to the previous feature phones, the company launched two feature phone models equipped with Android OS, and for the 2015-2016 winter/spring collections, it launched one feature phone model equipped with the (non-Android OS and non-iOS) OS that the company has traditionally used on its feature phones. As a partner for a smart life for each and every customer, the company offers a range of communications devices to make customers’ lives more secure, safe, convenient and comfortable. Services By providing high-speed communication services through PREMIUM 4G and docomo Hikari optical broadband service, the company has made efforts to provide a comfortable environment for telecommunications, allowing its customers to enjoy the breadth, speed, and convenience of its networks. Furthermore, in the company’s smart life business and other businesses, in addition to growing its services, such as dmarket for providing various content, it is developing new value-added services through +d initiatives founded on co-creation with various external partners.
