As of December 31, 2013, the company operated 460 aggregates quarries across its global operations dedicated to serving its ready-mix and aggregates businesses. Products The company tailors its products and services to suit customers’ specific needs, from home construction, improvement and renovation to agricultural, industrial and marine/hydraulic applications. Cement Cement: The company manufactures cement through a closely controlled chemical process, which begins with the mining and crushing of limestone and clay, and, in some instances, other raw materials. The clay and limestone are then pre-homogenized, a process which consists of combining different types of clay and limestone. The mix is typically dried, then fed into a grinder which grinds the various materials in preparation for the kiln. For cement limestone, clay and gypsum, the company runs chemical tests to prepare the mining plan of the quarry, to confirm material quality and reduce variations in the mineral content. As of December 31, 2013, 53 of the company’s 55 operative production plants used the dry process and 2 used the wet process. Its operative production plants that use the wet process are located in Nicaragua and the United Kingdom. Ready-Mix Concrete Ready-mix concrete is a combination of cement, fine and coarse aggregates, admixtures (which control properties of the concrete, including plasticity, pumpability, freeze-thaw resistance, strength and setting time), and water. It tailors its ready-mix concrete to fit its clients’ specific needs. The company also uses additives to customize its concrete consistent with the transportation time from its plant to the project, weather conditions at the construction site, and the project’s specifications. Aggregates The company supplies aggregates, including primarily the crushed stone, sand and gravel, used in all forms of construction. Customers use its aggregates for a range of uses, from a key component in the construction and maintenance of highways, walkways, and railways to an indispensable ingredient in concrete, asphalt, and mortar. Aggregates are obtained from land-based sources, such as sand and gravel pits and rock quarries or by dredging marine deposits. During 2013, the company’s total quarry material production was approximately 192 million tons. Related Products The company relies on its close relationship with its customers to offer them complementary products for their construction needs, from rods, blocks, concrete tubing and asphalt to electrical supplies, paint, tile, lumber and other fixtures. Trading Operations In 2013, the company traded approximately 9.5
