Canadian National Railway Company engages in the rail and related transportation business. The company’s network of approximately 20,000 route miles of track spans Canada and mid-America, from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the Gulf of Mexico, serving the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert (British Columbia), Montreal, Halifax, New Orleans, and Mobile (Alabama); and the key metropolitan areas of Toronto, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Duluth (Minnesota)/Superior (Wisconsin), Green Bay (Wisconsin), Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, and Jackson (Mississippi), with connections to all points in North America. The company’s network and connections to all Class I railroads provide its customers access to all three North American Free Trade Agreement nations. Regulation The company’s rail operations in Canada are subject to economic regulation by the Canadian Transportation Agency under the Canada Transportation Act; and safety regulation by the Federal Minister of Transport under the Railway Safety Act and certain other statutes. The company’s U.S. rail operations are subject to economic regulation by the Surface Transportation Board and safety regulation by the Federal Railroad Administration. In Canada, the company is subject to regulation by the Canada Border Services Agency. The company’s ownership of the Great Lakes Fleet vessels is subject to regulation by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration, which regulate the ownership and operation of vessels operating on the Great Lakes and in the U.S. coastal waters. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency has authority to regulate air emissions from these vessels. History Canadian National Railway Company was founded in 1922. The company was incorporated in 1922 by special act of the Parliament of Canada.
