Regulation The company’s rail operations in Canada are subject to economic regulation by the Canadian Transportation Agency under the Canada Transportation Act; and safety regulation by the Federal Minister of Transport under the Railway Safety Act and certain other statutes. The company’s U.S. rail operations are subject to economic regulation by the Surface Transportation Board and safety regulation by the Federal Railroad Administration. In Canada, the company is subject to regulation by the Canada Border Services Agency. The company’s ownership of the Great Lakes Fleet vessels is subject to regulation by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration, which regulate the ownership and operation of vessels operating on the Great Lakes and in the U.S. coastal waters. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency has authority to regulate air emissions from these vessels. History Canadian National Railway Company was founded in 1922.
