ications: Broadcast and Broadband Satellite Communication Applications – The company offers its customers TWTA products for use in various telecommunications applications used to transmit and amplify signals from satellite earth stations throughout the world. The company’s amplifiers can provide power levels that are vital to satellite communication applications such as traditional broadcast, direct-to-home (DTH) broadcast and satellite newsgathering. The company’s amplifiers are utilized in the broadband communications market sometimes referred to as the emerging High Throughput Satellite (HTS) systems that operate on Ka-band frequencies. Military Communications Applications: Tactical – Through programs such as the Warfighter Information Network- Tactical (WIN-T) program, the company’s amplifiers support high capacity U.S. military satellite systems, such as the Wideband Global Satellite Constellation. Its narrow-band SSPA products are a main component in communications systems used to support U.S. special operations forces around the world through the Family of Terminals (FOT) program. Military Communications Applications: Strategic – The company’s amplifiers are also used in strategic telecommunications systems. Defense and Electronic Warfare Market – U.S. and foreign military customers use its SSPAs and TWTAs in various electronic warfare systems (such as simulation, communications, radar, jamming and in identification friend or foe (IFF) systems). Commercial Applications – The company’s amplifiers are main components in commercial applications. Its amplifiers are used in oncology treatment systems that allow doctors to give cancer patients higher doses of radiation that are more closely focused on their tumors, thereby minimizing damage to healthy tissue. Business Strategy: The company manages RF Microwave Amplifiers segment with the following principal strategies: continue to develop a one-stop shopping approach for RF Microwave Amplifiers; continue to penetrate the market for outsourced amplifier production; continue marketing and sales efforts in the defense market including the mobile military market; and exploit TWTA capability in the global Direct-To-Home market. Mobile Data Communications segment The Mobile Data Communications segment provides customers with integrated solutions to enable global, satellite-based communications when mobile, real-time, secure transmission is required. The company principally sells relating to two U.S. military programs known as the U.S. Army’s Movement Tracking System (MTS) program and the Force XXI Battle Command, Brigade and Below (FBCB2) command and control system's BFT-1 program. Products, Services and Applications: The company’s mobile data satellite transceivers and related proprietary technology have been installed on various U.S. military vehicles (both logistics-centric and war-fighter-centric), including Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, helicopters such as the Apache, Black Hawk and Chinook and High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles. The company’s mobile data satellite transceiver products and related proprietary technology could also be used to facilitate communications in the event that natural disasters or other situations, such as a terrorist attack, disable or limit existing terrestrial communications. The company provides BFT-1 sustainment support to the U.S. Army pursuant to two three-year contracts. Business Strategy: The company’s business strategies for Mobile Data Communications segment include the following: work cooperatively with the U.S. Army; methodically seek out additional opportunities with the U.S. Army, including BFT 2.5; and expand business into foreign military markets. Customers Sales to U.S. government customers include sales to the DoD and intelligence and civilian agencies, as well as sales directly to or through prime contractors. Research and Development The company’s aggregate research and development expenditures included $47.2 million in fiscal 2014.
