Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. operates as a telecommunications service provider in Taiwan. Principal Lines of Business The company’s core business segments are its domestic fixed communications business, mobile communications business, Internet business and international fixed communications business. Domestic Fixed Communications Business The company’s domestic fixed communications business includes local telephone services and domestic long distance telephone services, broadband access services, local and domestic long distance leased line services, Wi-Fi services, multimedia on demand (MOD) services, and other domestic services, including information and communication technology (ICT), corporate solution services, and cloud computing services. The company is the major provider of local and domestic long distance telephone services in Taiwan. The company also provides interconnection with its fixed-line network to other mobile and fixed-line operators. Local Telephone The company provides local telephone services to approximately 11.4 million customers in Taiwan. Its fixed-line network reaches all homes and businesses in Taiwan. Domestic Long Distance Telephone The company provides domestic long distance telephone services in Taiwan. The company provides so-called ‘intelligent’ network services through its domestic long distance network, including toll-free calling and virtual private networks (VPN) services and others. The company also focuses on offering its customers an increasing number of value-added services (VAS) with flexible tariff packages. Broadband (FTTx and ADSL) Access The company provides broadband Internet access through connections based on its FTTx and ADSL technologies. FTTx generally offers a faster access medium for the company’s Internet customers compared to ADSL by using fiber optic technology. The company is continuing the build-out of its FTTx infrastructure. Since 2014, the company shifted its focus on fiber-to-the-home construction. The company provides broadband access services to other Internet service providers (ISPs) that do not have their own network infrastructure, and as a result, its broadband customers also include some customers that use its broadband data access lines and choose another provider for ISP services. The company offers various promotional packages to encourage migration of its ADSL subscribers to its FTTx service and migration of its FTTx subscribers to higher speed FTTx service. The company’s FTTx service offers downlink speeds of 6, 20, 60, 100 and 300 Mbps matched with uplink speeds of 2, 5, 20, 40 and 100 Mbps, respectively. Its ADSL service offers downlink speeds that range from 2 Mbps to 8 Mbps and uplink speeds that range from 64 kilobits per second (Kbps) to 640 Kbps. The company’s strategy is to continue the migration of ADSL subscribers to FTTx and the migration of FTTx subscribers to higher speed FTTx so as to maintain its competitiveness. Charges for the company’s HiNet dial-up service include a monthly fee entitling the customer to a fixed number of minutes of service, with an additional charge per minute when the fixed number of minutes is exceeded. Alternatively, the company offers its HiNet dial-up customers an unlimited number of minutes for a fixed monthly fee. Charges for the company’s FTTx and ADSL services include one-time installation charges and monthly subscription fees. These charges for its FTTx and ADSL services vary based on connection speed. Leased Line Services—Local and Domestic Long Distance The company provides domestic leased line services in Taiwan. Leased line services involve offering exclusive lines that allow point-to-point connection for voice and data traffic. Leased lines are used by business customers to assemble their own private networks and by telecommunications service providers to establish networks to offer telecommunications services.
