AngloGold Ashanti Limited operates as a gold mining company. Operations The company’s portfolio includes 17 mines in 9 countries. It conducts gold-mining operations in various regions, which represent its business segments, including South Africa (comprising the Vaal River, West Wits and Surface Operations); Continental Africa (comprising Ghana, Guinea, Mali, the DRC and Tanzania); Australasia (comprising Australia); and Americas (comprising Argentina and Brazil). The company’s main product is gold. Once mined, the gold ore is processed into doré (unrefined gold bars) on site and then dispatched to precious metals refineries for refining to a purity of at least 99.5%, in accordance with the standards of ‘good delivery’ as determined by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). This refined gold is then sold directly to bullion banks. By-products of the company’s gold mining operations include silver in Argentina, sulphuric acid in Brazil and uranium in South Africa. Greenfields and brownfields exploration takes place in both established and new gold-producing regions through managed and non-managed joint ventures, strategic alliances and wholly-owned ground holdings. The company’s discoveries include La Colosa, Gramalote and Quebradona (Nuevo Chaquiro) in Colombia and Tropicana in Australia. Vaal River – Kopanang: Kopanang is located in the Free State province, approximately 170 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg and approximately 10 kilometers southeast of the town of Orkney on a lease area of 35 square kilometers. The operation is west of neighbour Great Noligwa (part of Moab Khotsong) and bound to the south by the Jersey Fault. Vaal River – Moab Khotsong: Moab Khotsong is an underground gold mine in South Africa. It is situated near Orkney, Klerksdorp and Viljoenskroon, about 180 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg. Surface Operations: Surface Operations consists of Hard Rock Surface Sources and Mine Waste Solutions (MWS). Low Grade Stockpiles: The Vaal River and West Wits operations extract gold from various low grade stockpiles where there is more metallurgical capacity than reef mined. In addition, backfill product is produced and used as support in mining operations. The Hard Rock Surface Sources includes the rail transport infrastructure, the Vaal River and West Wits Laboratories and tailings management facilities. MWS: MWS is a gold and uranium tailings recovery operation located in the western portion of the Witwatersrand Basin, approximately 160 kilometers from Johannesburg approximately 8 kilometers from the town of Klerksdorp near Stilfontein in the North West Province. MWS consists of 14 tailings dams, which are made up of deposits from 3 gold and uranium mines. The tailings dams are scattered through an area that stretches approximately 13.5 kilometers north to south and 14 kilometers east to west. The footprints of the 14 tailings dams cover an area of approximately 1,100 hectares. West Wits operations: The West Wits operations, Mponeng and TauTona, are situated southwest of Johannesburg, on the border between Gauteng and North West Province. West Wits – Mponeng: Mponeng is located between the towns of Carletonville and Fochville on the border between Gauteng and the North West Province, southwest of Johannesburg. The underground operation extracts the Ventersdorp Contact Reef at depths between 2,800 meters and 3,400 meters through sequential-grid mining. West Wits – TauTona: TauTona lies on the West Wits Line, just south of Carletonville in Gauteng, approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg. The mine has a three shaft system, supported by secondary and tertiary shafts. Continental Africa Ghana – Iduapriem: Iduapriem, wholly owned by the company, comprises the Iduapriem and Teberebie properties on a 105 square kilometers concession.
