AmSurg Corp. operates as a physician-centric surgical center and physician services company. The company’s segments include Ambulatory Services and Physician Services. Ambulatory Services This segment acquires, develops and operates ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs, surgery centers, or centers) in partnership with physicians. The company’s surgery centers are typically located adjacent to or in proximity to the medical practices of its partner physicians. The company generally owns a majority interest, primarily 51%, in the facilities it operates. It also owns a minority interest in certain centers in partnerships with health systems and physicians and intenda to continue to pursue such partnerships. As of December 31, 2015, the company operated 257 ASCs in 34 states and the District of Columbia in partnership with approximately 2,000 physicians. The company’s surgery centers primarily provide elective, high volume, lower-risk surgical procedures across multiple specialties, including, among others, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, and orthopaedics. It acquires, develops and operates ASCs through the formation of strategic partnerships with physicians to serve the communities in the markets it serves. The procedures most commonly performed at the company’s surgery centers are gastroenterology - colonoscopy and other endoscopy procedures; ophthalmology - cataracts and retinal laser surgery; and orthopaedic - knee and shoulder arthroscopy and carpal tunnel repair. The size of the company’s typical single-specialty ASC is approximately 3,000 to 6,000 square feet. The size of its typical multi-specialty ASC is approximately 8,000 to 12,000 square feet. Each center typically has two to three operating or procedure rooms with areas for reception, preparation, recovery and administration. Each surgery center is specifically tailored to meet the needs of its physician partners. Its surgery centers perform an average of approximately 7,200 procedures per year, though there is a range among centers from a low of approximately 1,000 procedures per year to a high of approximately 31,000 procedures per year. Strategy: The key components of the company’s strategy are to attract and retain physicians that are leaders in their specialty and community; increase same-center revenues and profitability at its existing surgery centers; expand its national network of ASCs by selectively acquiring both single-specialty ASCs and multi-specialty ASCs, and developing new ASCs in partnership with physicians and health systems; and pursue the acquisition of companies that own and operate multiple ASCs. Competition: The company’s competitors include HCA Healthcare Corporation; Surgery Partners Inc.; Surgical Care Affiliates, Inc.; and United Surgical Partners, Inc., a subsidiary of Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Physician Services This segment provides outsourced physician services in multiple specialties to hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers and other healthcare facilities, primarily in the areas of anesthesiology, radiology, children’s services and emergency medicine. The company owns Sheridan Healthcare (Sheridan), a national provider of multi-specialty outsourced physician services to hospitals, ASCs and other healthcare facilities. As of December 31, 2015, the company provided physician services, primarily in the areas of anesthesiology, radiology, children’s services and emergency medicine services, to approximately 450 healthcare facilities in 29 states. This segment operates with a significant presence in Florida, California, Arizona and New Jersey. Anesthesiology Services The company provides outsourced anesthesia services in the United States.
