Advanced Energy Industries, Inc. designs, manufactures, sells, and supports power conversion products that transform power into various usable forms. The company’s products enable manufacturing processes that use thin-films for various products, such as semiconductor devices, flat panel displays, thin film renewables, hard and industrial coatings and architectural glass. The company also offers various operations and maintenance service plans that can be modified for individual photovoltaic sites of all sizes. In 2013, the company acquired Refusol Holding GmbH (Refusol), which develops three-phase string inverters for commercial customers across Europe and Asia. Business Units The company’s two business units include Thin Films Deposition Power Conversion and Thermal Instrumentation (Thin Films); and Solar Energy. Thin Films The Thin Films business unit principally serves original equipment manufacturers and end customers in the semiconductor, flat panel display, solar panel, and other capital equipment markets. The company’s thin-film deposition power conversion systems include direct current (DC), pulsed DC mid frequency, and radio frequency (RF) power supplies, matching networks, and RF instrumentation. These power conversion systems refine, modify, and control the raw electrical power from a utility and convert it into power that might be customized and is predictable and repeatable. Its power conversion systems are primarily used by semiconductor, solar panel, and similar thin-film manufacturers, including flat panel display, data storage, and architectural glass manufacturers. The company’s thermal instrumentation products are used in the semiconductor industry, as well as the solar panel and light emitting diode industries to provide temperature measurement solutions for applications in which time-temperature cycles affect material properties, productivity, and yield. These products are used in thermal processing, chemical vapor deposition, and other semiconductor and solar applications requiring non-contact temperature measurement. Solar Energy The Solar Energy business unit focuses on residential, commercial, and utility-scale solar projects and installations selling primarily to distributors; engineering, procurement, and construction contractors; developers; and utility companies. The company’s solar power inverters offer a transformer-based or transformerless grid-tied photovoltaic solution for residential, commercial, and utility-scale system installations. Its photovoltaic inverters are designed to convert renewable solar power, drawn from large and small scale solar arrays into electrical power. Sales and Distribution The company sells products through direct and indirect sales channels in North America, Europe, and Asia. Its sales operations are located in the United States, Canada, the PRC, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Australia, India, Greece, Italy, Czech Republic, and Taiwan. Customers The company’s products are sold worldwide to approximately 420 original equipment manufacturers and integrators and directly to approximately 1,387 end users. Its major customer includes Applied Materials Inc. Research and development The company’s research and development expenses were $58.3 million in 2013. Intellectual Property The company holds 103 United States patents and 55 foreign-issued patents, and has 151 patent applications pending in the United States, Europe, Asia, India, Brazil, South Africa, and Chile. Competition The following companies compete with power conversion products for thin film processing: MKS Instruments, Inc.; Comdel, Inc.; Daihen Corporation; Kyosan Electric Mfg. Co., Ltd.; Hüttinger Elektronik GmbH; Comet Holding AG; New Plasma Products; Entech; Plasmart; and ADTech. Lumasense Technologies, CI Systems, BASF, and Laytec GmbH offer products that compete with the company’s thermal products. SMA Solar Technology AG, Power-One, Inc. (a part of ABB Ltd.), Schneider Electric SA, and Siemens AG offer products that compete with the company’s solar inverters. History Advanced Energy Industries, Inc. was founded in 1981. The company was incorporated in Colorado in 1981 and reincorporated in Delaware in 1995.
