This segment issues the company’s charge and credit Cards in various countries worldwide. The company continued to bolster its international proprietary Card business through the launch of various new or enhanced Card products during 2014. These are Cards that the company issues, either on its own or as cobrands with partnering institutions. In 2014, among other new proprietary Card products, the company announced or launched various new cobranded Card products, including the American Express Make My Trip Credit Card in India and the American Express AeroplanPlus Reserve Card in Canada. The company offers majority of the same programs and services in its international proprietary Card-issuing business as the company does in its U.S. proprietary issuing business. Also, as in the United States, the company issues Cards internationally under distribution agreements with financial services institutions. Its distribution partnerships is affinity cards with fraternal, professional, educational, and other organizations. The company’s redemption options include travel, retail merchandise, entertainment, shopping and recreation gift certificates, experiences, financial services, and donations to benefit charities. In 2014, the company continued to improve its rewards programs. The company provides flexibility in the way Card Members could use their rewards points by upgrading its capabilities in certain countries to allow Card Members to use rewards to pay for eligible transactions on the Card Member’s statement, as well as at the point of sale in select retail locations in store and online. The company also offers the opportunity to pay for travel services by allowing International Consumer Card Members to use their Membership Rewards points to pay for their travel purchases and other charges in 18 countries outside the United States. The company, through Loyalty Partner, its marketing services company, builds coalition loyalty programs, such as the Payback program; and offers loyalty cards good for discounts and rewards at participating coalition partners. Coalition loyalty programs enable consumers to collect rewards points from various participating merchants through just one program. During 2014, the company expanded Payback into Italy, joining Germany, India, Mexico, and Poland as the fifth country in which Loyalty Partner operates coalition loyalty programs. As of December 31, 2014, Loyalty Partner had approximately 60 million active collectors, meaning consumers who collected and/or redeemed points at a Loyalty Partner merchant. Loyalty Partner also provides market analysis, operating platforms, and consulting services that help merchants improve their businesses. Using these services, participating merchants are able to run targeted and tailored campaigns across various channels. Loyalty Partner has expanded the company’s merchant relationships in certain countries, added consumers to its international customer base, and expanded its range of rewards and loyalty marketing services. It also provides the company opportunities to offer American Express products and services to new customer segments and develop new cobrand Card products, such as the Payback cobrand Card products in Germany, India, Mexico, and Italy. Competition The company’s proprietary Card-issuing business is subject to competition from multinational banks, such as Banco Santander, Citibank, HSBC, and others. Global Commercial Services segment This segment provides expense management and travel services to companies and organizations worldwide through the company’s Global Corporate Payments and Global Business Travel businesses. Business travel-related services are offered through the GBT JV, a non-consolidated joint venture. The company provides corporate payment solutions, and the GBT JV is a major travel management company for businesses worldwide.
