As of February 27, 2015, the company operated 11,879 stores in 43 states, primarily in the southern, southwestern, Midwestern, and eastern United States. Merchandise The company sells national brands from primary manufacturers, such as Procter & Gamble; PepsiCo, Inc.; Coca-Cola; Nestle; General Mills; Unilever; Kimberly Clark; Kellogg's; and Nabisco. Its stores offer approximately 11,000 total stock keeping units per store. The company separates its merchandise into four categories, such as consumables, seasonal, home products, and apparel. Consumables is the company’s major category and includes paper and cleaning products (such as paper towels, bath tissue, paper dinnerware, trash and storage bags, laundry, and other home cleaning supplies); packaged food (such as cereals, canned soups and vegetables, condiments, spices, sugar, and flour); perishables (such as milk, eggs, bread, frozen meals, and beer and wine); snacks (including candy, cookies, crackers, salty snacks, and carbonated beverages); health and beauty (including over-the-counter medicines and personal care products, such as soap, body wash, shampoo, dental hygiene and foot care products); pet (including pet supplies and pet food); and tobacco products. Seasonal products include decorations, toys, batteries, small electronics, greeting cards, stationery, prepaid phones and accessories, gardening supplies, hardware, automotive, and home office supplies. Home products includes kitchen supplies, cookware, small appliances, light bulbs, storage containers, frames, candles, craft supplies and kitchen, and bed and bath soft goods. Apparel includes casual everyday apparel for infants, toddlers, girls, boys, women and men, as well as socks, underwear, disposable diapers, shoes, and accessories. Seasonality The company’s business is seasonal to a certain extent. Its highest sales volume occurs in the fourth quarter (year ending January 2015), which includes the Christmas selling season, and the lowest occurs in the first quarter. The company purchases substantial amounts of inventory in the third quarter and incur higher shipping and payroll costs in anticipation of increased sales activity during the fourth quarter. In addition, the company carries merchandise during its fourth quarter that the company does not carry during the rest of the year, such as gift sets, holiday decorations, certain baking items, and an assortment of toys and candy. Trademarks The company owns marks that are registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is protected under applicable intellectual property laws, including without limitation the trademarks Dollar General, Dollar General Market, Clover Valley, DG, DG Deals, Forever Pals, I*Magine, OT Sport, Smart & Simple, trueliving, Sweet Smiles, Open Trails, Bobbie Brooks, Comfort Bay, Holiday Style, and Ever Pet along with variations and formatives of these trademarks, as well as certain other trademarks. The company also holds an exclusive license to the Rexall brand through March 5, 2020.
