Kinder Morgan, Inc. operates as an energy infrastructure company in North America. The company owns an interest in or operates approximately 84,000 miles of pipelines and 180 terminals. Its pipelines transport natural gas, refined petroleum products, crude oil, condensate, carbon dioxide (CO2), and other products; and terminals transload and store petroleum products, ethanol and chemicals, and handle such products as coal, petroleum coke and steel. The company also produces and transports CO2, which is utilized for enhanced oil recovery projects in North America. Segments The company operates through six segments, including Natural Gas Pipelines, CO2, Terminals, Products Pipelines, Kinder Morgan Canada, and Other. Natural Gas Pipelines The Natural Gas Pipelines segment includes interstate and intrastate pipelines and the company’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, and includes both the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulated and non-FERC regulated assets. The company’s primary businesses in this segment consist of natural gas sales, transportation, storage, gathering, processing and treating, and the terminaling of LNG. Within this segment, are approximately 52,000 miles of natural gas pipelines and its equity interests in entities that have approximately 19,000 miles of natural gas pipelines, along with associated storage and supply lines for these transportation networks, which are located throughout the North American natural gas pipeline grid. The company’s transportation network provides access to the major natural gas supply areas and consumers in the western U.S., Louisiana, Texas, the Midwest, Northeast, Rocky Mountain, Midwest and Southeastern regions. Its LNG storage and regasification terminals also serve natural gas supply areas in the southeast. The Design Capacity represents either transmission, gathering or liquefaction capacity depending on the nature of the asset. CO2 The CO2 segment engages in the production, transportation and marketing of CO2 to oil fields that use CO2 as a flooding medium for recovering crude oil from mature oil fields to increase production; ownership interests in and/or operation of oil fields and gas processing plants in West Texas; and the ownership and operation of a crude oil pipeline system in West Texas. The company’s CO2 pipelines and related assets allow it to market a complete package of CO2 supply, transportation and technical expertise to its customers. It also holds ownership interests in various oil-producing fields and owns a crude oil pipeline, all located in the Permian Basin region of West Texas. Competition: The company’s primary competitors include Oxy U.S.A., Inc. Terminals The Terminals segment engages in the ownership and/or operation of liquids and bulk terminal facilities located throughout the U.S. and portions of Canada that transload and store refined petroleum products, crude oil, condensate, and bulk products, including coal, petroleum coke, cement, alumina, salt and other bulk chemicals; and the ownership and operation of its Jones Act tankers. This segment includes the operations of its petroleum, chemical, ethanol and other liquids terminal facilities (other than those included in the Products Pipelines segment) and all of its coal, petroleum coke, fertilizer, steel, ores and other dry-bulk material services facilities, including all transload, engineering, conveying and other in-plant services. Its terminals are located throughout the U.S. and in portions of Canada. In addition, the company has Jones Act qualified product tankers that provide marine transportation of crude oil, condensate and refined products in the U.S. Products Pipelines The Products Pipelines segment engages in the ownership and operation of refined petroleum products and crude oil and condensate pipelines that deliver refined petroleum products (gasoline, diesel fuel and jet fuel), NGL, crude oil, condensate and bio-fuels to various markets; and the ownership and/or operation of associated product terminals and petroleum pipeline transmix facilities.
