The company provides its wireless telecommunications services principally through backbone networks using code division multiple access (CDMA), wide-band code division multiple access (WCDMA) and long-term evolution (LTE) technologies. In addition, the company provides wireless broadband Internet access through its WiBro service. The key elements of the company’s strategy are to maintain its leadership in the wireless services business by offering differentiated value-added products and services; strengthen its three next-generation growth platforms; and further expand its commerce business globally. Cellular Services The company offers wireless voice and data transmission services, sell wireless devices and provides Internet of things (IoT) solutions and lifestyle enhancement platform services through its cellular services segment. The company had 28.6 million wireless subscribers, including MVNO subscribers leasing its networks, as of December 31, 2015. Wireless Services The company offers wireless voice transmission and data transmission services to its subscribers through its backbone networks. The company’s wireless telecommunications services are available to its subscribers receiving service under the SK Telecom brand. In addition, customers could obtain wireless telecommunications services that operate on its network from MVNOs that lease its wireless networks. The company provides a voice-over-LTE service, known as its HD Voice service, to all of its LTE subscribers. HD Voice service is a premium communication service, which features voice transmission, fast call connection, voice-to-video call switching and digital content sharing during calls. In addition, the company provides T phone service, which is available on most devices running on the Google Android operating system. The company’s T phone service provides its customers with various convenient call functions, including a function to block spam calls and a function called T114 that informs customers of the phone numbers of stores, hospitals and other facilities closest in proximity to the customer’s current location. As of December 31, 2015, there were approximately 8.0 million subscribers to the T phone service. The company also offers its subscribers a range of wireless data transmissions services. The company’s messaging service allows its subscribers to send and receive text, graphic, audio and video messages. In addition, its subscribers could access various digital content and services through mobile applications providing music, video, gaming, news, commerce and financial services, as well as solutions that enable subscribers to access the Internet and email. Through service agreements with various foreign wireless telecommunications service providers, the company offers cellular global roaming services, branded as its T-Roaming service. Global roaming services allow subscribers traveling abroad to make and receive calls using their regular mobile phone numbers. In addition, the company provides global roaming service to foreigners traveling to Korea. In such cases, the company generally receives a fee from the traveler’s local wireless telecommunications service provider. Through SK Telink, the company also operates its MVNO business under the brand 7Mobile. SK Telink is focused on developing distribution channels and targeting niche customer segments that have a lower average revenue per user than that of SK Telecom’s subscriber base. In addition, the company provides interconnection service to connect its networks to domestic and international fixed-line and other wireless networks. Wireless Device Sales The company offers various categories of wireless devices, including smartphones and basic phones, tablets and other Internet access devices and wearable devices. As of December 31, 2015, approximately 20.6 million, or 72.0%, of its subscribers owned smartphones that have direct access to the Internet compared to approximately 19.5 million subscribers.
