Alleghany Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, provides various insurance services in the United States. The company operates in two segments, Reinsurance and Insurance. The Reinsurance segment provides property insurance comprising fire, allied lines, auto physical damage, and homeowners’ insurance services. This segment also offers casualty and other insurance that include liability, medical malpractice, ocean marine and aviation, auto liability, accident and health, surety, and credit insurance services. It distributes its products through brokers and directly to insurance and reinsurance companies. The Insurance segment underwrites specialty insurance coverages in the property, umbrella/excess liability, general liability, directors’ and officer’s liability, and professional liability. It also writes surety products, such as commercial surety bonds and contract surety bonds; and workers’ compensation insurance, as well as provides bonds in the construction segment. This segment offers its products through approximately 128 independent insurance brokers and 28 managing general insurance agents. The company also manufactures and remanufactures/retrofits precision machine tools and supplies replacement parts; explores and produces oil deposits; and manufactures custom trailers and truck bodies for moving and storage industry, and other markets. In addition, it owns and manages various properties comprising improved and unimproved commercial land, and residential lots, which include approximately 320 acres of property in California. Alleghany Corporation was founded in 1929 and is based in New York, New York.

Alleghany Corporation reported consolidated earnings results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2014. For the year, the company reported total revenues of $5,231,809,000 against $4,971,654,000 a year ago. Earnings before income taxes were $931,909,000 against $855,236,000 a year ago. Net earnings attributable to the company’s stockholders were $679,239,000 against $628,421,000 a year ago. Basic and diluted earnings per share attributable to the company’s stockholders were $41.40 against $37.44 a year ago. Book value per common share grew to $465.51 as of December 31, 2014, an increase of 12.7% from book value per common share of $412.96 at 2013 year-end and up 2.1% from book value per common share of $456.10 at September 30, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported net earnings of $139.1 million, or $8.61 per diluted share, compared with $205.3 million, or $12.24 per diluted share for the 2013 fourth quarter. Underwriting profit was $125.2 million, compared with $98.7 million for the fourth quarter of 2013, reflecting higher profits for the insurance segment, partially offset by slightly lower profits for TransRe. Total net premiums written for the fourth quarter of 2014 were $1,026.5 million, compared with $1,001.5 million for the fourth quarter of 2013, an increase of 2.5%.
