Worthington Industries, Inc., a metals manufacturing company, focuses on value-added steel processing and manufactured metal products in the United States, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and internationally. It operates through three segments: Steel Processing, Pressure Cylinders, and Engineered Cabs. The Steel Processing segment provides stainless and flat-rolled steel processing services to customers in the automotive, construction, lawn and garden, hardware, furniture, office equipment, leisure and recreation, appliance, agricultural, HVAC, container, and aerospace markets. It also toll processes steel for steel mills, large end-users, service centers, and other processors; and designs and manufactures reusable custom steel platforms, racks, and pallets for supporting, protecting, and handling products in the shipping process for customers in industries, such as automotive, lawn and garden, and recreational vehicles. The Pressure Cylinders segment manufactures and sells high-pressure and seamless steel cylinders for compressed natural gas, and other industrial gas storage applications; and filled and unfilled pressure cylinders, tanks, and various accessories and related products for various end-use market applications comprising consumer products, alternative fuels, industrial products, and energy. The Engineered Cabs segment designs and manufactures custom-engineered open and closed cabs, and operator stations for heavy mobile equipment in a range of industries; and manufactures other specialty weldments, kits, accessories, and cab components primarily to original equipment manufacturers. The company was founded in 1955 and is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

Worthington Industries, Inc. reported consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended November 30, 2014. For the quarter, GAAP and non-GAAP net sales were $871.0 million against $769.9 million last year. The increase was driven largely by higher volume in Steel Processing and the impact of recent acquisitions in Pressure Cylinders. Operating income was $33.2 million against $19.5 million last year. Earnings before income taxes were $47.1 million against $36.8 million last year. Net earnings attributable to controlling interest were $29.5 million or $0.43 per diluted share against $23.0 million, or $0.32 per diluted share last year. Net cash provided by operating activities was $2.3 million against $29.3 million last year. Investment in property, plant and equipment was $23.3 million against $17.1 million last year. Non-GAAP operating income was $47.9 million against $49.8 million last year. Non-GAAP earnings before income taxes were $60.9 million against $64.7 million last year. On an adjusted basis, net earnings attributable to controlling interest were $37.9 million, or $0.55 per diluted share, in the current quarter compared to $40.4 million, or $0.56 per diluted share, in the comparable prior year quarter. Effective tax rate increased from 26.9% in the prior-year quarter to 34.6% in the current quarter, also negatively impacting earnings per share. Free cash flow for the quarter was negative $21 million after capital expenditures of $23 million. For the six months, GAAP and non-GAAP net sales were $1,733.4 million against $1,462.2 million last year. Operating income was $85.4 million against $58.1 million last year. Earnings before income taxes were $118 million against $107.1 million last year. Net earnings attributable to controlling interest were $73.6 million or $1.06 per diluted share against $77.5 million, or $1.08 per diluted share last year. Net cash provided by operating activities was $56.8 million against $123.8 million last year. Investment in property, plant and equipment was $47.1 million against $30.4 million last year. For the quarter, impairment of long-lived assets was $14.2 million against $30.7 million last year. Impairment charges in the current quarter include $6.3 million related to the company's 60%-owned consolidated joint venture in India, $3.2 million related to the company's aluminum high-pressure cylinder business in New Albany, Miss., $2.4 million related to the Advanced Component Technologies business in Engineered Cabs, $1.2 million related to the military construction business and $1.1 million related to certain non-core Steel Processing assets. The prior year included a $30.7 million impairment charge related to the write-off of certain trade name assets.
