wal-mart stores inc (WMT) Key Developments

Provost Umphrey Files Suit against Wal-Mart Stores Inc. for Age & Race Discrimination

Provost Umphrey attorney Jane Swearingen Leger, along with Jill Swearingen Pierce of Bradley, Steele & Pierce, LLP and Clay Dugas of Clay Dugas and Associates, filed suit against Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Lake Charles, Louisiana on behalf of six plaintiffs alleging they were wrongfully terminated from Wal-Mart based on their age and race. Combined, the plaintiffs had over 100 years worth of work history with Wal-Mart stores. The lawsuit comes just days after Wal-Mart decided to pull all items with the Confederate flag from their stores and online. While Wal-Mart decided to pull the products based on rising racial tensions, the plaintiffs are all black and over 40 years of age. The plaintiffs have exhausted all of the administrative remedies available to them. The plaintiffs have all filed a Charge of Discrimination with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as the Louisiana Workforce Commission. Plaintiffs' claims involve the discriminatory practices of Wal-Mart through its store manager, Leah Loerwald. Clay Dugas has previously tried an employment discrimination case against Wal-Mart. In that case, the jury agreed that Wal-Mart unlawfully discriminated against a Texas employee based on the conduct of Mrs. Loerwald. Instead of terminating Mrs. Loerwald after the jury's finding of illegal discrimination, Wal-Mart simply transferred her to a store in Lake Charles, Louisiana where she continued her discriminatory practices.

Expanded Walmart Opens in Milpitas

The expanded area of the Milpitas Walmart opened to shoppers June 24, 2015. The expanded store at 301 Ranch Drive is now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It employs approximately 300 full- and part-time associates, approximately 80 of whom were hired due to the expansion. Store Manager Abraham Arroyo began his Walmart career in 2004 as an hourly associate in the produce department. As part of the expansion, the company says Milpitas customers will find fresh produce and a full line of groceries from brand names, including organic selections. There are now meat and bakery selections. The expansion grew the former 131,725-square-foot store north of McCarthy Ranch, to nearly 150,185 square feet.

Yowie Group to Rollout its Confectionery Products in 4,300 of Walmart Stores

The Yowie Group Ltd. will rollout Yowie's confectionery products in 4,300 of WALMART stores. The Yowie confectionery product will rollout nationally across the US from August 2015. The national launch across the entire network of Walmart stores is a direct result of a consistent Yowie sales performance that began with a 50 store trial in Texas during September 2014 extending in March 2015 to a rollout across 1,500 Walmart stores. The time from the 50 store trial to the complete national rollout of only 11 months confirms Walmart's high expectation for the Yowie product. Yowie ranging across all Walmart stores will be in prime in-store location for an impulse purchase on assisted and self check-out stands across all 4,300 stores, but may vary by store. The expanded point of sale to the self check-out lanes will give the product additional front-end exposure for impulse purchases. Walmart have advised the company that purchase orders shall be issued by end June 2015 to allow completion of distribution to Walmart's distribution centers by end July 2015.
