volkswagen ag (VLKAF) Key Developments

Volkswagen to Cut Working Hours, Jobs at Russian Plant

Volkswagen announced that it will reduce shifts and lay off at least 150 workers at its Russian car plant, to try to cut costs in a market downturn. Car sales in Russia dropped sharply last year as the economy was hit by a fall in oil prices and Western sanctions over Ukraine. The rouble also weakened, hurting demand. The company said its car plant in Kaluga, south of the capital Moscow, would work four days a week from April to July in 2015 and starting from May the number of shifts would decrease to two from three. As part of measures intended to help the company adapt to the current economic environment, the production would be suspended for two weeks on May 5-8 and May 12-15, it added. The company also said it would not renew contracts with at least 150 employees and would offer some others the chance to move to its new auto parts warehouse in the Moscow region or an engine plant. Both are scheduled to open later in 2015.

Volkswagen AG Suspends Plans to Build Production Plants in Taiwan

Volkswagen AG has suspended plans to construct production plants in Taiwan. The company has taken this step as it lacks policy support from the government. The company was planning to establish plants in Taiwan or outsource the production through original equipment manufacturers in Taiwan.

Volkswagen to Cut Jobs; to Transfer its Warehouses

Volkswagen AG will scale back production at its site in Kaluga, Russia and cut jobs in the country as car Market Shrinks in the country. The company is sending 120 workers from Kaluga to Germany for three-month training programs, transferring a number to its new warehouse near Moscow and allowing the contracts of about 150 temporary staff to expire. The Kaluga factory will reportedly reduce output by shifting to a four-day week from April to July and close for another eight working days in May. It will also switch to a two-shift schedule as of May instead of running three shifts.
