Texas Instruments Introduces Smallest and Lowest Power Battery Management Solution for Wearables and IoT Products

Texas Instruments introduced a highly integrated battery management solution presenting the industry's lowest quiescent current (Iq) at 700-nA with the buck converter, operating at 1.8V. The bq25120 features a linear charger, configurable LDO, load switch, buck converter, pushbutton control and battery voltage monitor all in one. The solution supports batteries from 3.6-V to 4.65-V, and fast charge currents from 5-mA to 300-mA, allowing wearables and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications to always be on without draining the battery. Features and benefits: Lowest quiescent current at 700-nA: The bq25120 maintains an always-on 1.8-V operation using power path technology and a low Iq buck converter. A host microprocessor, such as a TI host microprocessor or Bluetooth radio, such as TI's SimpleLink Bluetooth Smart CC2640 wireless MCU, is able to continue running during recharging by not extracting 'empty energy'. Designers can also achieve the longest battery shelf life as the solution features standby mode quiescent current of 50-nA; high integration: A configurable load switch/LDO output optimizes the system by shutting off rarely usedfunctions such as radios and displays to minimize battery drain. The solution also includes an integrated battery voltage monitor, enabling a state of charge indicator, buck converter and pushbutton control features; industry's smallest battery management solution: The solution's 2.5-mm by 2.5-mm WCSP package enables a small footprint making it easier for designers to integrate it into sleek wearable designs. For an even more robust solution, designers can incorporate the CC2640 wireless MCU as it is the industry's smallest QFN package solution with integrated Flash for Bluetooth Smart; accurate charge termination down to 500-µA: This feature maximizes the energy delivered to the battery before completing the charging cycle, allowing batteries to draw a more robust full charge; and customer flexibility: The bq25120's I2C programming interface gives designers the ability to set key parameters including battery charger voltage, current, termination threshold, input current limit, load switch control, flexible timer and reset options and more. The bq25120 can be used in conjunction with devices to integrate more end application features. Ultra-low Iq step-down converter, the TPS62743 [2] can be used for additional buck output. Boost converters can also be used for display integration. The TPS61046 [3] offers a 12V boost and the TPS61240 [4] with load connect, offers a 5-V boost for heart rate monitor or small displays.

Texas Instruments Introduces Ultra-Low-Jitter Clock Generators to Enable More Reliable Telecommunications Infrastructure Equipment

Texas Instruments introduced a new family of clock generators that provides ultra-low jitter of 100 femtoseconds (fs) and flexible, unique pin control options. Compared to conventional reference clock solutions, the new clock generators' jitter performance enables system designers to optimize system timing margins and bit error rate (BER) to reduce data transmission errors. This allows for more reliable communications, networking, server, computing, and high-performance industrial equipment. LMK033x8 clock generators also offer versatile features to reduce design cycle time by facilitating easy prototype design and evaluation. Key features and benefits of LMK033x8 clock generators: Ultra-low jitter performance enables flexible jitter budgeting: Up to two high-performance PLLatinum™ fractional-N phase-locked loops (PLLs) with eight outputs enable ultra-low jitter performance of 100 fs root mean square (RMS) over multiple integration bandwidths (1 KHz-5 MHz and 12 KHz-20 MHz). Designers can take advantage of the ultra-low jitter to improve their system BER and increase the reliability of their telecommunications infrastructure equipment. Flexible, simple configuration: A unique pin-mode control feature enables designers to easily select from 71 pre-programmed frequency startup plans compared to one-time programmable memory offered by competitors. Integrated electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) enables easy customization, while the I2C interface gives system designers complete control of device configuration. Reduced design cycle time: Glitchless fine/coarse frequency margining enables designers to simplify the stress and compliance testing of their systems during design verification and process verification (DVT/PVT) of prototypes. Immune to supply noise: Integrated low-dropout regulators (LDOs) provide immunity to power-supply noise without requiring complex filter designs. Evaluation modules (EVMs) enable designers to quickly and easily evaluate the devices. The LMK03328EVM is available now, and the LMK03318EVM will be available in fourth quarter of 2015 from the TI store and authorized distributors for $299. TI's WEBENCH® Clock Architect tool simplifies the design process for the LMK033x8 family, as well as for other TI clock and timing devices. The tool can recommend a single- or multiple-device clock-tree solution from a broad database of devices to meet system requirements. It features PLL filter design, phase-noise simulation, and the ability for designers to optimize clock-tree designs for their performance and cost requirements. Support is available in the TI E2E™ Community Clock and Timing forum, where engineers can search for solutions, get help, share knowledge, and solve problems with fellow engineers and TI experts. LMK033x8 clock generators come in a 7-mm-by-7-mm quad-flat no-lead (QFN) package. The LMK03328 dual-PLL eight-output clock generator is available now and priced at $10.00 in 1,000-unit quantities (1ku). The LMK03318 single-PLL eight-output clock generator will be available in Fourth Quarter 2015 and will be priced at $7.50 in 1ku.

Texas Instruments Introduces Fast Half-Bridge Gate Driver for Discrete Power MOSFETs and IGBTs that Operate Up to 600 V

Texas Instruments Inc. introduced the fast half-bridge gate driver for discrete power MOSFETs and IGBTs that operate up to 600 V. The UCC27714 high-side, low-side driver with 4-A source and 4-A sink current capability reduces component footprint by 50%, enabling higher power density in high-frequency, offline AC/DC power supplies used in server, telecom and industrial designs including uninterruptible power supplies. The UCC27714 delivers 90 nanosecond (ns) propagation delay, 40% lower than existing silicon solutions, tight control of the propagation delay with a maximum of 125 ns across -40 C to 125 C and tight channel-to-channel delay matching of 20 ns across -40 C to 125 C. The device eliminates the need for bulky gate drive transformers, saving significant board space in high-frequency switch-mode power electronics. Key features and benefits of the UCC27714: Smaller footprint creates highest power-density solutions: The UCC27714 reduces gate driver component footprint by 50% in secondary-side controlled power supplies. Advanced noise toleration: Negative voltage handling of -6 V at the switched-node pin creates the ability to tolerate noise, causing virtually no malfunctions in the electronic system. MOSFETs have the ability to drive over a wide power range: The device's high-current capability of 4 A enables MOSFETs to drive over a wide power range, from a few watts to a kilowatt. Operates across wide temperatures: All electrical characterizations have little variations across operating temperatures, creating a simplified design and speeding time to market. The UCC27714 is now available in the TI store and through the company's authorized distribution network. The high-speed 600 V high-side low-side gate driver comes in a small outline integrated circuit (SOIC)-14 package and is priced at $1.75 in 1,000 unit-quantities.
