The Travelers Companies, Inc., through its subsidiaries, provides various commercial and personal property, and casualty insurance products and services to businesses, government units, associations, and individuals in the United States. It operates in three segments: Business Insurance; Financial, Professional, and International Insurance; and Personal Insurance. The Business Insurance segment offers property and casualty products, such as commercial multi-peril, commercial property, general liability, commercial auto, and workers’ compensation insurance. This segment operates in six groups: Select Accounts, which serves small businesses; Commercial Accounts that serves mid-sized businesses; National Accounts, which serves large companies; Industry-Focused Underwriting that serves targeted industries; Target Risk Underwriting, which serves commercial businesses requiring specialized product underwriting, claims handling, and risk management services; and Specialized Distribution that offers products to customers through licensed wholesale agents and program managers. The Financial, Professional, and International Insurance segment provides surety and financial liability coverage, which uses credit-based underwriting processes; and property and casualty products primarily in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland. The Personal Insurance segment offers property and casualty insurance covering personal risks, primarily automobile and homeowners insurance to individuals. The company distributes its products primarily through independent agencies and brokers. The Travelers Companies, Inc. was founded in 1853 and is based in New York, New York.

The Travelers Companies, Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2014. For the quarter, the company reported operating income of $1,023 million or $3.07 per diluted share and net income of $1,038 million or $3.11 per diluted share on total revenues of $6,783 million compared to operating income of $981 million or $2.68 per diluted share and net income of $988 million or $2.70 per diluted share on total revenues of $6,737 million reported a year ago. Net written premiums were $5,836 million compared to $5,633 million reported a year ago. Operating return on equity was 17.7% compared to 16.8% reported a year ago. Return on equity was 16.6% compared to 15.9% reported a year ago. Net income after-tax increased $50 million, or 5%, primarily due to an increase in operating income. Operating income after-tax increased $42 million, or 4%, driven by a higher underwriting gain, partially offset by lower net investment income and an increase in other expense. Net written premiums increased 4% primarily driven by growth in domestic business insurance and the inclusion of Dominion. Net cash provided by operating activities was $525 million compared to $927 million reported a year ago. Income before income taxes was $1,460 million compared to $1,371 million reported a year ago. For the year, the company reported operating income of $3,641 million or $10.55 per diluted share and net income of $3,692 million or $10.70 per diluted share on total revenues of $27,162 million compared to operating income of $3,567 million or $9.46 per diluted share and net income of $3,673 million or $9.74 per diluted share on total revenues of $26,191 million reported a year ago. Net written premiums were $23,904 million compared to $22,767 million reported a year ago. Operating return on equity was 15.5% compared to 15.5% reported a year ago. Return on equity was 14.6% compared to 14.6% reported a year ago. Book value per share was $77.08 compared to $70.15 as at December 31, 2013. Adjusted book value per share was $70.98 compared to $66.41 as at December 31, 2013. Net income after-tax increased $19 million, or 1%, as an increase in operating income was mostly offset by a reduction in net realized investment gains. Operating income after-tax increased $74 million, or 2%, primarily driven by a higher underwriting gain and higher net investment income, partially offset by an increase in other expense. Net written premiums increased 5% primarily due to the inclusion of Dominion and growth in domestic business insurance. Net cash provided by operating activities was $3,693 million compared to $3,816 million reported a year ago. Income before income taxes was $5,089 million compared to $4,945 million reported a year ago.

Travelers Looking To Sell St. Paul Tower

The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) is in negotiations to sell its pyramid-topped building in downtown St. Paul. "For several years, we have evaluated whether to lease part, or sell, the north building," Matt Bordonaro, spokesman for Travelers said, said. "Our decision to potentially sell the north building is driven by the costs of operating and maintaining a facility that we are not fully occupying."
