Trimble Announces Updated Version of its ThingMagic Mercury API Software Development Kit

Trimble announced an updated version of its ThingMagic Mercury API software development kit to include full support for the ThingMagic Nano embedded UHF RFID module. The software update also includes expanded functionality to allow customers to set Autonomous Operation functions directly through Mercury API. This functionality, available for ThingMagic's Micro and Micro-LTE embedded UHF RFID modules, enables hardware read triggers and savable configuration settings in the module. Previously, autonomous operation could only be deployed using the Autonomous Configuration Tool. Customers currently using the ThingMagic Micro and Micro-LTE modules in their existing RFID products use the Mercury API to write applications to control the module. The MercuryAPI supports Java, .NET and C programming environments. The Mercury API Software Development Kit (SDK) contains sample applications and source code to enable developers to get started demonstrating and developing functionality. With the latest release of Mercury API users can save configuration settings such as RF power, duty cycle and read triggers as well as which antennas are searchable, among many others. In addition, the Micro and Micro-LTE can be configured to start reading and outputting tag data on power up or on change of state of a general purpose input (GPI) line. The new saved settings options can be configured using the Mercury API or using the Autonomous Configuration Tool. In addition, this mode of operation results in decreased power consumption because the 'read on power up' mode allows the reader to only consume power when it is on. There is no power consumption if the device is off, making it an ideal solution for a battery-operated device such as a handheld reader.

Major California Water Utility Experiences Significant Savings Using Technology Solution from Trimble and Badger Meter

Trimble and Badger Meter announced that adoption of the Trimble® Unity solution has enabled the City of Sacramento Department of Utilities (DOU) to streamline installations and achieve significant savings on their citywide Badger Meter Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) deployment project. The initial rollout of the Trimble technology solution streamlined the Badger Meter deployment and produced a return-on-investment (ROI) in 3 months; with the full deployment projected to enable the DOU to achieve savings of approximately $1.6 million over the 5-year meter deployment project. For the Advanced Metering Analytics (AMA) solution, DOU is deploying new endpoints with a BEACON AMA system using ORION two-way fixed network endpoints. To support the deployment and maximize efficient use of resources, the DOU selected Trimble Unity software, a unified, GIS-centric, collaboration platform for managing critical utility assets and field operations, and the Trimble Ranger™ 3 rugged handheld computers, equipped for use with the ORION SE network. The Trimble Unity Meter Change-out app, which supports meter deployment, installation and maintenance operations, was used for the WMRA project. The DOU realized its ROI for the Trimble Unity solution in just 3 months. The total projected savings attributable to Trimble Unity for the WMRA project are approximately $1.6 million over the 5-year meter deployment project. These savings came from the elimination of extra trips to each worksite (installation and inspection are now completed in one trip, rather than two) and elimination of back-office manual data entry. Trimble partnered with Badger Meter to modify the Trimble Ranger 3 rugged handheld computer with an integrated ORION transceiver for operation within the ORION two-way fixed communications network. For the WMRA project workflow, DOU office personnel schedule jobs in Cityworks; projects are then imported into Trimble Unity and dispatched to the field crews using the Trimble Ranger 3 handheld computers. The crews can use the Rangers to sync their jobs over Wi-Fi, program the meters, capture meter information and condition data, including the GPS location of each meter and photos if needed, and transmit the data to the back office, where personnel use Trimble Unity to review the project progress and export projects and data into Cityworks. The Trimble Unity solution is a unified, GIS-centric, cloud-based and mobile collaboration software platform that includes a suite of applications for managing critical utility assets and field operations. By integrating GIS and field operations, sensors and wireless communications, mobile workers and office professionals, and field and back-office enterprise systems, Trimble Unity provides a comprehensive solution for improving operations, reducing cost, enhancing customer service, and regulatory reporting. Trimble Unity is available through a software-as-a-service (SaaS) subscription.

Trimble Introduces Outage Management Planning and Response Solution for Natural Gas Utilities

Trimble announced the availability of Trimble GasOMS system, an integrated outage management solution that enables natural gas utilities to model and simulate outage planning, streamline service restoration workflows, automate communications during service interruptions, and enhance Distribution Integrity Management Plan (DIMP) reporting. By using Trimble GasOMS, natural gas utilities can reduce operational costs, keep customers better informed during outages, and support regulatory reporting requirements with compliance data that is traceable, verifiable and defensible. Trimble GasOMS allows gas utilities to streamline restoration workflows by integrating and automating communication between operations personnel and field crews. The outage management solution can identify affected customer locations and assist in prioritizing critical customers, such as hospitals and schools. Trimble GasOMS can also integrate with other solutions, such as Trimble Field Inspector, a robust maintenance and inspection solution for optimizing utility field operations. For large-scale outages, Trimble GasOMS can provide natural gas utilities with a workflow process to better coordinate multi-agency support for more effective response and service restoration. Trimble GasOMS also supports a Web-based outage map to keep customers and the general public informed of service outage status and can integrate to messaging systems to send notices to customers. By logging tasks and interactions during an outage, Trimble GasOMS can create a digital historian to provide real-time information for the gas utility incident commander. The digital historian can then be used in the DIMP and other compliance reporting requirements as well as after action reviews and analysis, training and process improvement. The solution can integrate with other Trimble and third-party applications including work order management, Customer Information System (CIS), Geographic Information System (GIS) and field data collection solutions. Trimble GasOMS is the latest release in a suite of Trimble Energy products and solutions that address a broad range of smart utility network operations—from planning, design and construction to operations and maintenance.
