Synopsys Releases Coverity Software Testing Platform

Synopsys Inc. has released the Coverity Software Testing Platform, an integrated suite of testing solutions that reportedly enables organizations to find and fix critical quality and security issues earlier in the software development lifecycle, or SDLC. Coverity 7.7 adds coverage for JavaScript and Objective-C and expands the company's security testing capabilities. New features in the Coverity Software Testing Platform include: Coverage for JavaScrip, Coverage for Objective-C, Security coverage for C#, Security reporting for development supply chain, and Support for MISRA coding standards. To predict runtime behavior and data typing, Synopsys has applied innovative techniques for JavaScript, which traditionally has been difficult to analyze. This new solution can find issues such as incorrect expressions, dead code, syntax errors, leaking variables and many more. The Coverity Software Testing Platform adds support for Objective-C and is compatible with the Clang compiler and finds issues such as buffer overflows, memory corruptions, race conditions and many more. With deep roots in security for C/C++ and Java, the latest release of the Coverity Software Testing Platform introduces security for C#. Synopsys Inc. Announces USB Type-C IP Solutions

Synopsys Inc. announced that it has introduced the industry's first USB IP solutions that support the USB Type-C (USB-C) connectivity specification as well as the USB 3.1, 3.0 and 2.0 specifications. The new Type-C specification simplifies mechanical USB connectors with reversible cables, rotational symmetry, up to 10 Gbps data rate, bi-directional power delivery, audio multiplexing and alternate modes such as DisplayPort and MHL. The company DesignWare USB-C PHYs integrate Type-C functionality, reducing BOM costs by eliminating discrete multiplexers and crossbar switch components, which were previously required to support the small, reversible Type-C connector. Supporting the USB Type-C connector requires two SuperSpeed or Enhanced SuperSpeed datapaths, so designers could either implement two non-Type-C USB PHYs in a dual PHY solution or choose a single PHY that is optimized for Type-C. The DesignWare USB-C PHYs supporting USB 3.1, 3.0 and 2.0 offer an optimized solution with small area and use up to 40% fewer pins than a dual PHY solution for Type-C. In addition, the DesignWare USB-C PHYs are based on the established DesignWare USB PHY architectures that are shipping in volume in 28-nanometer (nm) and 14/16-nm FinFET silicon, enabling designers to reduce system-on-chip (SoC) design risk when implementing the IP in advanced process technologies. The DesignWare USB-C PHYs are optimized for low power, meeting the stringent requirements of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, high-volume consumer applications such as digital TVs, storage and networking applications. The DesignWare USB-C 3.1 PHY offers 10 Gbps and 5 Gbps data transfer rates and consumes less than 55mW power at 10 Gbps speeds. The DesignWare USB-C 3.0 PHY supports all USB 3.0 and 2.0 speed modes (SuperSpeed, High-Speed, Full Speed and Low Speed) in a single easy-to-integrate GDSII design. The DesignWare USB-C PHYs are part of Synopsys' complete USB solution, which also includes controllers, verification IP, IP Prototyping Kits and IP software development kits. Together, they reduce IP integration risk and speed time-to-market for consumer and mobile SoCs. The DesignWare USB 3.1 Controller IP, based on the DesignWare USB 3.0 Controller IP architecture which has shipped in more than 100 million SoCs, supports 10 Gbps data transfer rates, power saving capabilities and backward compatibility with existing USB 3.0 software stacks and device drivers. The DesignWare USB 3.1/3.0 IP Prototyping Kits [6] and IP software development kits provide the essential hardware and software elements needed to reduce IP prototyping and integration effort, enabling designers to start implementing USB IP in an SoC in minutes. Synopsys USB Verification IP is based on a 100% SystemVerilog, UVM-based architecture with test suites delivered as source code to enable quick development of a verification environment to verify the proper integration and connection of the USB interface within the SoC. Availability: The DesignWare USB-C 3.1 PHY, DesignWare USB-C 3.0 PHY and DesignWare USB 3.1 PHY are available now. Synopsys Inc. Announces the Availability of Version 8.3 of its LightTools® Illumination Design Software

Synopsys Inc. announced the availability of version 8.3 of its LightTools® illumination design software, which offers a new Advanced Design Module with robust capabilities for modeling freeform optics for a wide range of applications. The new capabilities enable users to easily incorporate freeform surfaces in illumination designs to produce optical systems that have increased energy efficiency, superior light control and innovative design forms. In addition, LightTools 8.3 delivers new features for highly accurate design and modeling of phosphor-based LED systems. The new LightTools Advanced Design Module introduces a set of specialized tools to enable fast, robust modeling of reflective and refractive freeform optics in both single-surface and segmented configurations for a diverse set of illumination applications. Freeform optical surfaces provide many advantages over conventional optics for meeting complex illumination requirements, such as precise light control, innovative styling, compact system dimensions and energy efficiency. In addition, the Advanced Design Module leverages proprietary algorithms from Synopsys' LucidShape® products that automatically calculate and construct optical geometries based on user-defined illuminance and intensity patterns. This unique, functional approach gives designers the freedom to focus on overall design objectives rather than the implementation details of complex optical components. Key features in the Advanced Design Module include: Freeform Design features for modeling freeform reflective and refractive surfaces that are automatically shaped to form the resulting light pattern. Freeform design features are especially advantageous for systems with small light sources, such as LEDs and halogen lamps. MacroFocal Reflector tool for designing multi-surface segmented reflectors, with different spreads for each facet. MacroFocal Reflector is useful when designing lighting systems for applications that need precise control of the light pattern or sharp intensity cutoffs at one or more sides of the beam. Applications include street lights, outdoor and architectural lighting systems. Procedural Rectangle Lens tool for designing surfaces with pillowed optical arrays, which enable precise light distribution control in LED luminaires and signal lighting, as well as in applications that require superposition of optical distributions. LED Lens tool for creating various types of freeform LED collimator lenses, which are effective for producing efficient, highly directed light distributions. LightTools 8.3 includes new capabilities to assist designers in modeling spatial temperature and power density variations in phosphor-based LEDs. Phosphors are known to change output under various conditions, including wide temperature ranges and changes in power density. These factors are important to consider when modeling phosphor layers in applications such as high-power white LED packages. LightTools 8.3 includes a new application programming interface (API) that gives users a high level of flexibility for developing custom volume scattering components that can be dynamically linked with LightTools. The API is particularly useful for defining interactions in phosphor-based LEDs. A new Volume Scatter Logger has been added to the LightTools Utility Library. The utility creates a log of scattering and phosphor conversion events to show what is happening in a scattering material, such as the amount of absorbed and lost energy, as well as shifts in wavelength. Without this type of capability, designers must infer what is happening within the volume by looking at the exiting rays. The new utility gives users greater insight into where energy density changes occur within the material. LightTools version 8.3 is available now.
