South State Corporation operates as the bank holding company for South State Bank that provides a range of retail and commercial banking services, mortgage lending services, trust and investment services, and consumer finance loans. It accepts demand deposits, interest-bearing transaction accounts, certificates of deposits, and savings deposits, as well as other time deposits; and offers lending and credit card, ATM processing, and wealth management and trust services. The company also provides investment advisory and broker dealer services. It operates 127 financial centers in 19 South Carolina counties and 4 North Carolina counties, as well as 10 northeast Georgia counties and 2 coastal Georgia counties. The company was formerly known as First Financial Holdings, Inc. and changed its name to South State Corporation in July 2013. South State Corporation was founded in 1933 and is headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina.

South State Corporation announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2015. The company’s book value per common share increased to $41.71 per share at March 31, 2015, compared to $40.78 at December 31, 2014. Tangible book value per common share increased by $1.01 per share to $26.60 at March 31, 2015, from $25.59 at December 31, 2014. This increase was primarily the result of the strong net income during the quarter, net of the dividend paid to shareholders. Total interest income was $83,998,000 compared to $87,456,000 a year ago. Net interest income was $81,049,000 compared to $83,466,000 a year ago. Income before provision for income taxes was $36,251,000 compared to $25,749,000 a year ago. Net income was $23,926,000 compared to $16,917,000 a year ago. Net income available to common shareholders was $23,926,000 compared to $15,844,000 a year ago. Diluted earnings per common share were $0.99 compared to $0.66 a year ago. Operating earnings per common share - Diluted (non-GAAP) was $0.99 compared to $0.82 a year ago. Return on average assets (annualized) was 1.23% compared to 0.86% a year ago. Operating return on average equity (annualized) (non-GAAP) was 9.73% compared to 8.51% a year ago.
