SunOpta Inc. sources, processes, packages, and markets natural, organic, and specialty food products in the United States, Canada, Europe, China, and Ethiopia. Its Global Ingredients segment offers identity preserved, non-genetically modified (non-GMO), and organic seeds and grains, including soy, corn, and sunflower; seed and grain-based animal feed, and pet food products; and organic fruit- and vegetable-based raw materials and ingredients, sweeteners, cocoa, coffees, ancient grains, nuts, seeds and pulses, and other organic food products. This segment also engages in the grain milling for corn, coffee and sesame seed processing, and dry and oil roasting and packaging activities; and provision of seed and grain conditioning services, and specialty organic functional ingredients, as well as liquid and dried format seed, grain, and cocoa-based ingredients. The company’s Consumer Products segment offers aseptic beverages, such as soy, almond, rice, coconut, sunflower, and other non-dairy and alternative beverages; and baby food, puddings, sauces, fruits, vegetables, and protein based snacks in organic and conventional re-sealable pouch products. This segment also offers organic and conventional beverage products comprising shelf stable and refrigerated juices, specialty beverages, vitamin and electrolyte waters, and energy drinks; nutritious snacks; natural and organic frozen fruits and vegetables; and specialty fruit toppings and bases. Its Opta Minerals segment produces, manufactures, distributes, and recycles industrial minerals, silica-free abrasives, specialty sands, and other products and services to foundry, steel, loose abrasive cleaning, roofing granule, marine/bridge cleaning, waterjet cutting, municipal, recreational, and industrial water filtration industries. The company was formerly known as Stake Technology Ltd. and changed its name to SunOpta Inc. in October 2003. SunOpta Inc. was founded in 1973 and is headquartered in Brampton, Canada.

SunOpta, Inc. to Expand to Add Aseptic Production Lines at its Existing Manufacturing Facility in Upper Macungie Township

Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Davin announced that SunOpta Inc. will expand to add aseptic production lines at its existing manufacturing facility in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County, a move that will create at least 53 new jobs and retain 52 jobs over the next three years. The company received a funding proposal from the Department of Community and Economic Development including $106,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits and a $23,850 WEDnetPA grant. SunOpta will invest more than $32 million at its current 101,000-square-foot facility to provide manufacturing space for additional aseptic production lines and to make leasehold improvements, utility upgrades and acquire machinery and equipment.

SunOpta Inc. reported consolidated unaudited earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported revenues of $303,406,000 compared with $322,379,000 for the same period last year. Earnings from continuing operations before income taxes was $7,575,000 compared with $11,016,000 for the same period last year. Earnings from continuing operations was $4,818,000 or $0.08 diluted per share compared with $6,583,000 or $0.10 diluted per share for the same period last year. Earnings attributable to the company was $5,234,000 or $0.08 diluted per share compared with $6,640,000 or $0.10 diluted per share for the same period last year. Net cash flows from operations - continuing operations was $11,486,000 compared with $12,130,000 for the same period last year. Purchases of property, plant and equipment was $5,651,000 compared with $3,574,000 for the same period last year. EBITDA was $14,816,000 compared with $17,400,000 for the same period last year. The increase in Revenue was primarily due to stronger demand for organic ingredients in the U.S. and Europe, partially offset by lower sales in snack-based food categories and competitive pressures on certain steel and industrial mineral products in Opta Minerals. The company generated operating income of $9.4 million or 3.1% of revenues in the first quarter compared to $12 million or 3.7% of revenues in the first quarter of 2014. The decline in operating income is attributable to Opta Minerals and Consumer Products. At April 4, 2015, the company's consolidated debt, net of cash, was $137.1 million.
