The Southern Company, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a public electric utility company. It is involved in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity through coal, nuclear, oil and gas, and hydro resources in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi. The company also constructs, acquires, owns, and manages generation assets, including renewable energy projects. As of December 31, 2014, it operated 33 hydroelectric generating stations, 33 fossil fuel generating stations, 3 nuclear generating stations, 13 combined cycle/cogeneration stations, 9 solar facilities, 1 biomass facility, and 1 landfill gas facility. The company also provides digital wireless communications services with various communication options, including push to talk, cellular service, text messaging, wireless Internet access, and wireless data; and wholesale fiber optic solutions to telecommunication providers in the Southeast. The Southern Company was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

South Mississippi Pulls Out Of Southern Co. Project

South Mississippi Electric Power Association, Inc. dropped its plan to buy a $600 million, 15% stake in the Mississippi coal-fired power plant project spearheaded by Atlanta-based Southern Company (NYSE:SO), citing construction delays. Southern, in turn, notified state regulators that it may have to raise electricity rates for Mississippi power customers by 41%, or $37 a month for the typical household, to pay for the project.

Southern Co Inaugurates 7-MW Expansion of the Dalton Solar Plant

Southern Co announced that it has inaugurated a 7-MW expansion of the Dalton Solar Plant. Located in Dalton, in the state of Georgia, the newest installation represents the third phase of the project, adding to the approximately 700 kW from two previous phases. They came online in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Dalton Solar Plant is Georgia Power's first self-developed and self-built solar generation facility.

Southern Company Announces Consolidated Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended March 31, 2015

Southern Company announced consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported total revenues of USD 4,183 million against USD 4,644 million a year ago. Operating income was USD 957 million compared to USD 700 million a year ago. Net income was USD 525 million compared to USD 368 million a year ago. Earnings before income taxes were USD 799 million against USD 544 million a year ago. Net income available to common shareholders was USD 508 million or 56 cents basic a share against USD 351 million or 39 cents basic a share a year ago. Earnings for the first quarter of 2015 were positively influenced by retail revenue effects at Southern company's traditional operating companies, offset by milder winter weather compared to 2014 and increased operating and maintenance expenses. Net income excluding items was USD 514 million or USD 0.56 basic a share compared to USD 586 million or USD 56 basic a share a year ago.
