Sony Corporation Unveils New SA3800 Spectral Cell Analyzer

Sony Corporation has announced the launch of its SA3800 spectral cell analyzer, a new flow cytometer equipped with a newly developed autosampler that features three-dimensional drive. The SA3800 combines ease of operation with full automation, and its autosampler delivers high-speed analysis and processing performance. A flow cytometer is a device that irradiates cells stained with a fluorescent reagent with a laser and analyzes the types and properties of the cells by measuring fluorescence and scattered light. Flow cytometers are widely used in cellular research fields such as immunology, oncology, and regenerative medicine, as well as in drug discovery. Particularly in realms like drug discovery and biomarker discovery, which require analysis of many types of cells, there is a real need for the capacity to analyze large numbers of specimen rapidly, efficiently, and accurately. With conventional autosamplers, the well plate moves horizontally, while the sample suction probe moves vertically to collect the samples. The consequence of this is that the sample must traverse a relatively long distance before reaching the measuring unit, and this can cause issues with processing speed and carryover ratio. The SA3800's newly developed autosampler employs a stationary sample suction probe and a well plate that moves in three dimensions, thus speeding the sample acquisition and analysis process. Additionally, the probe has a built-in self-washing function that further reduces the carryover ratio to 0.1% or less. These capabilities enable the SA3800 to realize stable yet high-speed sample collection, which is a much sought after feature for the analysis of large numbers of samples. The optical unit employs Sony's original spectral analysis system for detecting fluorescence waveforms, which has a proven track record as a technology installed in Sony's SP6800Z series cell analyzer already on the market. The adoption of a highly sensitive 32 channel photomultiplier tube makes possible the detection and separation of the previously unmeasurable factor of cell autofluorescence. It also greatly simplifies the time-consuming process of fluorochrome correction and ensures that results are verifiable, regardless of who is operating the device. Main features of the SA3800 include: Newly developed 3D AutoSampler, highly accurate and reliable analysis with Sony's original spectral analysis function and Flexible optical system accommodating up to four lasers. The SA3800's autosampler employs 3-dimensional drive to collect cell samples rapidly and reliably. When used in concert with 96-well or 384-well plates6, automated analysis of large numbers of specimen can be accomplished rapidly and with low carryover. In combination with the 32 channel photomultiplier tube, this enables highly accurate measurement of fluorescence waveforms. As needed, 405 nm, 561 nm, and 638 nm lasers can be added to supplement the standard 488 nm laser. It is also possible to upgrade the SA3800 with additional lasers at a later date.

Sony Corp Announces New Digital Cameras

Sony Corp. announced two types of high-end compact digital cameras equipped with a newly-developed CMOS sensor integrated with DRAM. The size of the new sensor, "Exmor RS" (pixel count: about 20.2 million), is 1.0 inch as in the case of the Exmor R, which is used for Sony's existing compact digital cameras. However, while the signal processing circuit is formed on the same layer as the image sensor in the Exmor R, the signal processing circuit of the Exmor RS is formed on a different layer. As a result, the scale of the circuit increased, drastically improving signal processing speed. Moreover, a DRAM die is attached to the back side of the sensor. A large amount of data from the sensor is temporarily stored in the DRAM so that data flow does not become stagnant. Then, the data is transmitted from the DRAM to the image processing engine. Equipped with the Exmor RS sensor, the new compact digital cameras, "Cyber-shot RX100 IV" and "Cyber-shot RX10 II," are capable of super slow motion replay (up to 40x) with a frame rate of 960/480/240fps (recording format: 60/30/24p).

Sony Plans To Raise Funds

Sony Corporation (TSE:6758) plans to raise almost $4 billion through the sale of new stock shares and debt. It will invest the money into its growing image sensors business.
