Siemens Wins Two Contracts from Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation for Building Substations

Siemens has won two contracts from Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for the turnkey construction of three substations in Qatar and for the supply of air-insulated switchgears. The company will supply three 132/11kV substations as part of Phase II of the Qatar Power Transmission System expansion project, which has been devised to meet the growing demand for electricity in Qatar, as the country continues to witness rapid development and urbanisation. Kahramaa's expansion projects aim to ensure a stable power supply to all sectors, including households, business centers, shopping malls, hospitals and schools throughout Doha and its suburbs. The first substation, Al Wukair-1, will be located inside Al Wakrah stadium boulevard, about 10km from Doha. The second, Al Heedan, will be at the proposed Al Khor stadium and the third, Learaig, is to be constructed at Salwa Beach Resort near Qatar's border with Saudi Arabia. The substations will provide a power supply for residential, commercial and industrial applications in Qatar, including two new sports stadiums, and are planned for completion within 15 months. Efficient and reliable power transmission is fundamental to a sustainable, environmentally sympathetic energy system. Each of the turnkey 132kV substations comprises Siemens 8DN8 132kV gas-insulated switchgear, four 40MVA power transformers, two boards of 11kV switchgears, station auxiliary transformers, complete protection and substation control system, associated LV, power and control cables and high-voltage cable diversion works. Siemens has also been awarded an additional contract by Kahramaa for 654 NX Air 11kV air-insulated switchgears, inclusive of protection for secondary distribution, for greater reliability and stability of Qatar's electricity network. Siemens switchgears will be implemented over a two-year period.

Atos and Siemens to Increase IT Collaboration

Atos and Siemens have announced that they will explore further opportunities for joint collaboration in the fields of advanced data analytics, cyber security and device connectivity. The companies, which formed their alliance in 2011, increased the funding of their joint innovation investment programme from EUR 100 million initially to EUR 150 million. This has allowed Atos and Siemens to develop a pre-configured analytics platform for customers to accelerate their digital transformation, especially in the field of smart data.

Siemens to Supply, Install and Commission 67 of its 6-Megawatts Direct Drive Offshore Wind Turbines with a Total Capacity of 402 Megawatts at the Veja Mate Offshore Wind Power Plant

Veja Mate Offshore Project GmbH announced that 15-year service and maintenance agreement, representing the wind service order for Siemens in Germany. Siemens will provide a highly advanced offshore service logistics concept, tailored specifically for far-shore projects such as Veja Mate that uses both helicopters and a specially designed, purpose-built service operation vessel (SOV). It will be the fifth SOV to be deployed by Siemens in European waters. To ensure increased energy production this concept allows maintenance work to be carried out at almost all times irrespective of the weather conditions or wave height. The 400-megawatts offshore project in German Waters is located in the North Sea northwest of Borkum island at 115 km from the shore. It will be installed at water depths ranging from 39 to 41meters. With average wind speeds of more than 10 meters per second at a hub height of 80 meters above sea level, the site offers excellent conditions for a high energy yield. Grid access will be provided by BorWin2, a HVDC grid connection also built by Siemens. BorWin 2 was handed over to operator TenneT early this year and is already in commercial operation. Its 800 megawatts capacity encompasses the grid connection for both Veja Mate and also the Global Tech I offshore wind farms. The financing is being provided through a combination of equity and debt, with SFS working in partnership with Highland Capital Group and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners in the multi-source project financing structure. SFS is investing a substantial amount as equity and thus contributes a notable piece to the overall project funding.
