Sembcorp Industries to Build 426-Megawatt Power Plant in Bangladesh

Sembcorp Industries announced that it will make its foray into Bangladesh by building a 426-megawatt power plant with a total project cost of $390 million (SGD 557 million). The build-own-operate project in the Sirajganj district of Bangladesh was awarded to the company’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Sembcorp Utilities, by the government of Bangladesh. The power plant will be fuelled primarily by natural gas with high speed diesel as backup fuel. It will supply power to the grid under a 22.5-year power purchase agreement with the Bangladesh Power Development Board, when completed in 2018. The company will own a 71% stake in the project while North-West Power Generation Company, a subsidiary of the Bangladesh Power Development Board, will hold the remaining 29%. A joint venture company, Sembcorp Sirajganj Power Company, will be incorporated in Bangladesh to undertake the project.

Sembcorp Partners with EDB to Launch Industrial Living Laboratory in Singapore

Sembcorp Industries Ltd. has entered into a partnership with the Singapore Economic Development Board, or EDB, to launch industrial living laboratory in Singapore. As a living lab, Sembcorp will grant technology providers access and share insights into its proprietary wastewater treatment and waste-to-energy facilities on Jurong Island for late-stage test-bedding and co-innovation of water and environmental technologies. The Sembcorp Industrial Living Lab initiative is in line with the company's forward-looking approach in developing its competitive edge through technology and innovation, as well as Singapore's vision to be the leading demand driver of smart and sustainable urban solutions, which was identified as a key growth driver for the economy. The Sembcorp Industrial Living Lab initiative offers technology providers a rare opportunity to leverage best-in-class industrial wastewater treatment and waste-to-energy facilities to conduct applied R&D (R&D) in areas such as smart water systems and carbon capture. The initiative will also see Sembcorp and EDB jointly investing up to a total of SGD 8 million to support the commercialisation of R&D projects from the pilot-testing stage to market-ready levels. Under the partnership, proposals from technology providers will be jointly evaluated by Sembcorp and EDB for their scalability, technological merits and economic impact to Singapore. Sembcorp's researchers and engineers will then work with successful applicants to test bed their new technologies in actual industrial settings. If the technologies are proven successful, they have the potential to be deployed in Sembcorp's global operations. This gives smaller players that do not own any infrastructure the chance to scale up their technologies and develop a highly-prized track record.

Sembcorp Industries Commissions Second Unit at $1.5 Billion Coal-Fired Power Plant in Andhra Pradesh, India

Sembcorp Industries has commissioned the second and final 660MW unit of the $1.5 billion coal-fired power plant in the coastal town of Krishnapatnam, in Andhra Pradesh state of India. The 1,320MW power station, which is the first power project of the company in India, features two units. Each of the unit has a power generation capacity of 660MW with the first unit already being operational since April. The project is owned and operated by Thermal Powertech Corporation India (TPCIL) which is a joint venture between Sembcorp and Gayatri Energy Ventures. The power plant also features supercritical technology for enhanced efficiency and reduced emissions when compared to other conventional coal-fired power plants while meeting increasing power demand in the southern part of the country. About 500MW of the total output of the power plant is sold to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana power distribution companies under a 25-year power purchase agreement. The company is also developing a 1,320MW coal-fired power plant adjacent to TPCIL in India, with 49% stake while the remaining stake is owned by NCC Infrastructure Holdings, a joint company of NCC and Gayatri Energy Ventures.
