Renault Unveils its Compact Hatchback Kwid in India

Renault has unveiled its latest hatchback in a bid to get a foothold into India's massive but crowded compact car market. The vehicle, named Kwid, will compete with Maruti Suzuki's Alto and Hyundai's Eon hatchbacks. Powered by a three-cylinder, 800 cc gasoline (petrol) engine, the vehicle features several design elements from sport utility vehicles (SUVs). These include a high ground clearance of 180 mm, short front and rear overhangs, and an aggressive overall styling. The vehicle is the first product based on the modular CMF-A platform. Although pricing of specific trims has not been disclosed, Renault has indicated the vehicle will be priced between INR 300,000 (USD 4,698) to INR 400,000. The vehicle will be made available for sale in the second-half of the calendar year. Airbags are not expected to be offered as standard fitment; however, the company plans to offer the safety features as optional. The vehicle has been developed by Renault's engineering teams in India, France, and Japan. The company said the vehicle's body and chassis were tested in Japan while body equipment was evaluated in South Korea and endurance tests were carried out in France. The majority of assembly testing and component sourcing was done in India through the Renault-Nissan Technical Business Centre India (RNTBCI) - the alliance's engineering and purchasing centre in the country.
