Update On Sale Of Government Stake In Royal Mail

U.K. Business Secretary Sajid Javid overruled his most senior official to insist that staff at Royal Mail plc (LSE:RMG) should get up to 1% of the company as the government sold down its remaining stake. Martin Donnelly, permanent secretary at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, wrote to Javid on June 11, 2015 the day the sale was announced, saying he wasn’t persuaded giving away the shares represented good value for money and that he’d need a written instruction before he went ahead.

Government To Sell 15% Stake In Royal Mail

The Government has begun the process is selling 15% stake or around 150 million shares in Royal Mail plc (LSE:RMG). A Department for Business spokesperson said, "The Business Secretary has today authorized a sale process to begin. Current market conditions represent a good opportunity to achieve value for the taxpayer”. The placing of shares will take place overnight through a process known as an accelerated book build to institutional investors only with retail investors unable to access the process. The deal will raise more than £770 million at current market prices and reduce the Government stake from 30% to 15%. The Government said it had appointed Rothschild to advise Business Secretary Sajid Javid on selling the stake. Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Cazenove have been appointed to act as joint bookrunners in connection with the placing.

Government To Divest Stake In Royal Mail In 2015

George Osborne announced plans to divest the Government's remaining stake in Royal Mail plc (LSE:RMG). He stated that the sale of the 30% stake worth around £1.5 billion will begin in 2015. He said: “I am today announcing that the Government will begin selling the remaining 30% shareholding we have in the Royal Mail. It is the right thing to do for the Royal Mail, the businesses and families who depend on it - and crucially for the taxpayer.”
