Sociedad Quimica Y Minera De Chile to Close Mining Operations at its Pedro de Valdivia Facility

Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile (SQM) announced that it will close the mining operation at its Pedro de Valdivia facility, due to an increase in iodine production capacity at its Nueva Victoria facilities. SQM said it was no longer necessary to continue the mining operation at the Pedro de Valdivia facility in the second region of Chile, as the company's iodine production capacity is expected to reach 9,000 tonnes/year at the Nueva Victoria facilities, located in the first region of Chile. The mining operation has been largely focused on the production of nitrates and currently produces 500,000 tonnes/year. The operation also has iodine production of approximately 2,800 tonnes/year. SQM said it would partially continue operating the iodine plants, processing iodine solutions and operating other facilities at Pedro de Valdivia. Production of iodine and nitrates at the site will be reduced to approximately a third of current capabilities. The iodine output from the Nueva Victoria facility and the operations being maintained in Pedro de Valdivia will amount to an overall iodine production capacity of approximately 10,000 tonnes/year. Around 713 employees will be impacted by the closure of the Pedro de Valdivia production facilities.
