ppg industries inc (PPG) Key Developments

PPG Industries Inc. Introduces VERSABOND Pretreatment System for Mixed-Metal Applications

PPG Industries Inc. has introduced the VERSABOND pretreatment system, a fast kinetic-efficient zinc-phosphate pretreatment formulation that improves the corrosion resistance of mixed-metal substrates while enabling manufacturers to realize the environmental and energy-saving benefits of extended bath life, reduced sludge and lower processing temperatures. Based on proprietary hypernucleation technology developed by PPG, the Versabond system incorporates a rinse conditioner that causes small, densely packed zinc-phosphate crystals to deposit on mixed-metal substrates, accelerating bond formation with the coating, particularly on surfaces with higher concentrations of aluminum. Depending on the composition of the metal mix, the Versabond pretreatment system may process at temperatures up to 20% lower than those required for conventional zinc-phosphate formulations. It also extends average bath life from two weeks to eight weeks and generates 30 to 50% less sludge, resulting in less waste, lower energy consumption and fewer maintenance demands. The Versabond pretreatment system is engineered to improve the corrosion resistance of underbody truck and vehicle parts such as springs, control arms, tie rods, frames and exhaust system components. It also can be used on appliances and heavy-duty equipment (HDE) components, and by general manufacturers seeking to upgrade a zinc-phosphate pretreatment system.

PPG Industries Inc. Readies for 1,700 Job Cuts Worldwide

PPG Industries will cut about 1,700 employees worldwide as part of a restructuring aimed at integrating recent acquisitions more efficiently. The company said the cuts represent less than 4% of its global workforce of approximately 46,000. The restructuring, which the company said should be completed in 2016, also includes adjusting production capacity, although PPG provided few specifics on which facilities might be affected. The company expects to record pretax charges of $135 million to $140 million in the second quarter related to the downsizing actions. It projects the restructuring will generate savings of $100 million to $105 million by 2017, including savings of $15 million to $20 million this year.

PPG Industries Inc. Elects Michael W. Lamach to Board of Directors

Lamach, chairman, president and CEO of Ingersoll-Rand plc, was elected to serve on the company’s board of directors. Lamach has been in his current role with Ingersoll-Rand since June 2010.
