Principal Financial Group, Inc. provides retirement, asset management, and insurance products and services. It operates through Retirement and Investor Services, Principal Global Investors, Principal International, and U.S. Insurance Solutions segments. The Retirement and Investor Services segment provides a portfolio of asset accumulation products and services for retirement savings and investment to businesses, institutional clients, and employees of business and other individuals. It offers products and services for defined contribution pension plans, including 401(k) and 403(b) plans, defined benefit pension plans, nonqualified executive benefit plans, and employee stock ownership plans; investment-only products; and annuities, mutual funds, and bank products. The Principal Global Investors segment provides equity, fixed income, real estate, and other alternative investments, as well as asset allocation, stable value management, and other structured investment strategies. The Principal International segment offers pension accumulation and income annuity products, mutual funds, asset management, and life insurance accumulation products, as well as voluntary savings plans in Brazil, Chile, China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Mexico, and the Southeast Asia. This segment also promotes and advises on retirement and long-term investment products. The U.S. Insurance Solutions segment provides individual life insurance products comprising universal and variable universal life insurance and traditional life insurance; and specialty benefits consisting of group dental and vision insurance, individual and group disability insurance, and group life insurance, as well as non-medical fee-for-service claims administration services in the United States. It also provides insurance solutions for small and medium-sized businesses and their owners, as well as executives. Principal Financial Group, Inc. was founded in 1879 and is headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa.

Principal Financial Group Inc. reported earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2015. For the quarter, the company's total operating revenues were $3,406.8 million against $2,542.6 million a year ago. Operating earnings before tax, non-controlling interest and preferred stock dividends was $424.3 million against $425.4 million a year ago. Net investment income was $815.9 million against $815.4 million a year ago. Operating earnings were $323.9 million or $1.09 per diluted share against $323.1 million or $1.08 per diluted share a year ago. Net income available to common stockholders was $241.1 million or $0.81 per diluted share against $306.3 million or $1.03 per diluted share a year ago. After adjusting for normalizing items and foreign exchange rates, operating earnings increased 10% over second quarter 2014. Return on equity was 13.8%. For the six months, the company's total operating revenues were $5,951.4 million against $5,041.9 million a year ago. Operating earnings before tax, non-controlling interest and preferred stock dividends was $832.3 million against $836.1 million a year ago. Net investment income was $1,559.3 million against $1,717.6 million a year ago. Operating earnings were $650.3 million or $2.18 per diluted share against $640.2 million or $2.14 per diluted share a year ago. Net income available to common stockholders was $655.3 million or $2.20 per diluted share against $600.0 million or $1.98 per diluted share a year ago. Book value per common share was $32.89 against $33.56 a year ago. Book value per common share excluding accumulated other comprehensive income was $34 against $31.52 a year ago. The company declared a dividend of 38 cents per common share for the third quarter of 2015. The dividend will be payable on September 25, 2015, to shareholders of record as of September 4, 2015.
