PSA Peugeot-Citroen's DS Brand Signs Partnership with Virgin Racing for Formula E

PSA Peugeot-Citroen's DS brand has signed a partnership with Virgin Racing to take part in the second season of the electric car Formula E championship. The deal will see the team take on the name DS Virgin Racing Team during the 2015/16 season. It will also see the DS brand through its motorsport division involved in research and development of the race car, together with the design strategy of Virgin Racing Engineering. The announcement comes at the close of Formula E's first season. The sport is one of the first for electric vehicles (EVs) and is seen as representing support for the direction that road cars are taking. Currently, the vehicles are based on the same Spark Racing Technology platform, with powertrain and electronics developed by McLaren Electronic Systems and integration undertaken by Renault. PSA's EV programme is relatively weak compared to some automakers, with only the Mitsubishi i-MiEV-based Citroen C-Zero and Peugeot iOn, as well as electric vans, being available. However, there is a clear intention to electrify its models in future, and this could suggest that DS will be a key part of this programme. As the championship develops, there may well be greater freedom for teams to homologate their own technology for use, which could lead to PSA bringing to the market EV systems that are related to those used in these vehicles.

Peugeot to Invest $632 Million in Morocco Car Factory

PSA Peugeot Citroen signed an accord to build a new factory aimed at producing up to 200,000 cars annually for the African and Middle East market. The factory involves an investment of EUR 557 million and is the second major agreement between Morocco and a the company, following Renault's 2013 building a factory in Tangiers. Peugeot head Carlos Tavares said the deal was part of the larger plan to revive the company's fortunes and eventually sell a million vehicles in Africa within a decade. Morocco exported $4 billion worth of cars and parts in 2014 and already in the first four months of 2015 there has been a 12% increase from the same period last year. The sector provides some 80,000 jobs, roughly 10% of the industrial employment.
