The Travelers Companies, Inc., through its subsidiaries, provides a range of commercial and personal property, and casualty insurance products and services to businesses, government units, associations, and individuals in the Unites states and internationally. It operates in three segments: Business and International Insurance; Bond & Specialty Insurance; and Personal Insurance. The Business and International Insurance segment offers property and casualty products, including commercial multi-peril, commercial property, general liability, commercial automobile, workers' compensation, personal property, employers' liability, public and product liability, professional indemnity, surety, marine, aviation, personal accident, and kidnap and ransom insurance. This segment operates through select accounts, which serve small businesses; commercial accounts that serve mid-sized businesses; national accounts, which serve large companies; first party that provides traditional and customized property insurance programs to large and mid-sized customers; and specialized distribution, which markets and underwrites its products through brokers, wholesale agents, program managers, and specialized retail agents. The Bond & Specialty Insurance segment provides fidelity and surety, general liability, and others, such as workers' compensation, commercial automobile, and commercial multi-peril insurance products. The Personal Insurance segment offers property and casualty insurance covering personal risks, primarily automobile and homeowners insurance to individuals. The company distributes its products primarily through independent agencies and brokers. The Travelers Companies, Inc. was founded in 1853 and is based in New York, New York.

The Travelers Companies, Inc. Reports Consolidated Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended March 31, 2015

The Travelers Companies, Inc. reported consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported net income of $833 million, or $2.55 per diluted share compared to net income of $1.052 billion, or $2.95 per diluted share, in the prior year quarter. Operating income in the current quarter was $827 million, or $2.53 per diluted share, compared to $1.052 billion, or $2.95 per diluted share, in the prior year quarter. The decrease in net and operating income primarily resulted from the factors described above. Per diluted share amounts also benefited from the impact of share repurchases. Total revenues were $6,626 million compared to $6,708 million, operating return on equity of 14.5% compared to 17.8% and return on equity of 13.4% compared to 16.8% for the last year. Book value per share as on March 31, 2015 was $77.96 compared to $73.06 as on March 31, 2014 and adjusted book value per share as on March 31, 2015 was $71.45 compared to $68.25 as on March 31, 2014. Net investment income was $592 million compared to $736 million a year ago. Book value per share and adjusted book value per share were both reduced by approximately $0.75 per share in the current quarter due to the impact of changes in foreign currency exchange rates. Net investment income decreased primarily due to lower private equity and fixed income returns. Net written premiums was $5,897 million compared to $5,873 million in last year. Net written premiums increased slightly from the prior year quarter, benefitting from positive renewal premium changes in all segments and higher retention and new business volumes in Business and International Insurance and Personal Insurance, partially offset by the impact of changes in the timing and structure of certain of the Company’s reinsurance treaties and the impact of changes in foreign currency exchange rates.
