ON Semiconductor Corporation manufactures and sells semiconductor components for various electronic devices worldwide. It operates in four segments: Application Products Group, Image Sensor Group, Standard Products Group, and System Solutions Group. The Application Products Group segment provides analog, mixed-signal, and advanced logic application specific integrated circuit and application specific standard product solutions; and offers solutions for voltage and current options, as well as foundry and manufacturing services, including integrated passive devices technology, integrated circuit (IC) design, packaging, and silicon technology offerings. The Image Sensor Group offers complementary metal oxide semiconductor and charge-coupled device image sensors and processors. The Standard Products Group segment provides discrete and integrated semiconductor products that perform application functions, such as power switching, signal conditioning, circuit protection, signal amplification, and voltage reference; and develops lower capacitance protection and integrated signal conditioning products to support data transmission rates, micro packages, and switching and rectification technologies. The System Solutions Group segment supplies analog and mixed signal ICs, digital signal processors, analog and digital tuners, intelligent power modules, and memory and discrete semiconductors. The company’s devices are used in various end-products, such as automotive electronics, smartphones, media tablets, wearable electronics, computers, servers, industrial building and home automation systems, consumer white goods, imaging systems, LED lighting, power supplies, networking and telecom equipment, medical diagnostics, imaging and hearing health, and sensor networks, as well as the Internet-of-Things. It serves original equipment manufacturers, distributors, and electronic manufacturing service providers. The company was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.

ON Semiconductor Corp.and Transphorm Introduce GaN Cascode Transistors

ON Semiconductor Corporation and Transphorm Inc. have announced the introduction of the co-branded NTP8G202N and NTP8G206N 600V GaN cascode transistors and a 240W reference design that utilizes them. ON Semiconductor and Transphorm are working to be at the forefront of new development and accelerate widespread adoption in the marketplace." With typical on-resistances of 290 and 150 mÃ, the two new products, NTP8G202N (TPH3202PS) and NTP8G206N (TPH3206PS) are offered in an optimized TO-220 package for easy integration with customers' existing circuit board manufacturing capabilities. Both of the 600 V products have been qualified using JEDEC standards and are in mass production. The NCP1397GANGEVB (TDPS250E2D2) evaluation board is offered as a complete reference design for customers to implement and evaluate GaN cascode transistors in their power designs. The evaluation board offers customers a smaller footprint and better efficiency than power supplies using traditional devices. The boost stage delivers 98% efficiency and utilizes the NCP1654 power factor correction controller. The LLC DC-DC stage uses NCP1397 resonant mode controller to offer 97% full load efficiency. This performance is achieved while running at 200+ kHz and impressively is also able to meet EN55022 Class B EMC performance.

Transphorm Inc., Transphorm Japan Inc., and ON Semiconductor Announce the Start of Production of Co-Branded GaN Power Devices

Transphorm Inc. announced at APEC 2015, in partnership with ON Semiconductor, the introduction of two co-branded 600V gallium nitride (GaN) cascode transistors and a 240W reference design that utilizes them. This introduction builds on the previously announced partnership between Transphorm Inc., Transphorm Japan Inc., and ON Semiconductor to bring GaN-based power solutions to market. With typical on-resistances of 150 and 290 mOhms, the two new GaN products, TPH3202PS (ON Semi equivalent: NTP8G202N) and TPH3206PS (ON Semi equivalent: NTP8G206N), are offered in an optimized TO-220 package for easy integration with customers existing circuit board manufacturing capabilities. The two-stage evaluation board NCP1397GANGEVB (Transphorm equivalent: TDPS250E2D2) is offered as a complete reference design so that customers can implement GaN cascode transistors in their power designs. The evaluation board is representative of a production power supply that has been re-designed for smaller size and higher performance systems, and it highlights the capability and potential of GaN transistors in this power range. The boost stage delivers 98% efficiency and utilizes the NCP1654 power factor correction controller. The LLC DC-DC stage uses the NCP1397 resonant mode controller to offer a 97% full load efficiency. This performance is achieved while running at 200+ kHz and is also able to meet EN55022 Class B EMC performance. The Transphorm GaN HEMT devices are in mass production at the Fujitsu Semiconductor group's CMOS-compatible, 150mm wafer fab in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima, Japan. The large-scale, automotive-qualified facility, which is providing exclusive GaN foundry services for Transphorm and its partners, will allow dramatic expansion of Transphorm's GaN power device business to meet the growing customer demand.

ON Semiconductor to Show Next Generation Power Systems in Action at APEC 2015

ON Semiconductor will be showcasing some of its latest advances in power management technology at APEC, including a new LLC current-mode power supply for computers and LED TVs, significant developments in GaN, and a sensor-less motor driver controller. Current-Mode LLC Power Supply: One of the demonstrations will include the first current-mode LLC controller, the NCP1399, highlighting the safety features and benefits inherent to a current-mode control approach. The power supply reference design will incorporate the NCP1399 along with ON Semiconductor's NCP4810 X2 capacitor discharger, NCP1602 power factor controller, and NCP4305 synchronous rectification controller. This system solution is predominantly aimed at power supplies for all-in-one computers and large LED TVs, as well as ultra-high density power adapters. It is capable of achieving markedly higher performance, lower standby power and higher power conversion efficiency levels than would be possible using competitive devices. The current-mode control architecture of the NCP1399 is the heart of the power supply reference design bringing built-in protection features, faster transient response and light load efficiency enhancements. The NCP4305 provides improved efficiency with a large 8 A driver and built-in light load detection. Converter with GaN High-Electron-Mobility Transistors (HEMTs): A two-stage converter demonstrating the latest high-efficiency results obtainable with GaN will also be featured at APEC. This 240 watt (W) supply achieves 95% peak efficiency with the NCP1397 LLC controller, NCP1654 power factor correction controller, and TPH3202PS or NTP8G202N GaN transistor switching devices. The board utilizes GaN HEMTs in both the PFC stage and in the primary side of the LLC stage. Automotive Motor Driver: The motor driver demonstration showcases a next generation software-less automotive motor driver solution, LV8907. On-chip intelligent sensor-less commutation logic enables LV8907 to drive a brushless DC (BLDC) motor without any position sensor, thereby reducing the solution cost and footprint. This software-less solution with on-chip configuration registers can be customized for a wide range of motor and load combinations using an easy-to-use and free graphical user interface (GUI) utility from ON Semiconductor. LV8907 with pre-loaded configuration registers can drive the motor in a stand-alone mode without an external system controller. With an integrated LIN transceiver, LV8907 can also deliver a LIN-based advanced motor drive solution using a small and low cost companion controller that is required only for LIN management tasks.
