For the month, the company reported year-over-year increase in its less-than-truckload tons per day for May 2015 of 9.6%, which followed comparable-period growth of 9.7% for April 2015. The company updated its 2015 second-quarter expectations for growth in LTL tons per day to a range of 9.5% to 10.0% over the second quarter of 2014 from the previously disclosed range of 9.0% to 10.0%. The company also updated its expectations for year-over-year growth in LTL revenue per hundredweight, excluding fuel surcharges, for its second quarter of 2015 to a range of 5.0% to 5.5% from the previously disclosed range of 5.5% to 6.5%.

Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. announced that Greg C. Gantt, the Company’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, has been promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer. David S. Congdon will remain the Company’s Chief Executive Officer and will assume the new responsibilities of Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. J. Wes Frye, the Company’s Senior Vice President - Finance and Chief Financial Officer, has announced his plans to retire from the Company effective December 31, 2015. Adam N. Satterfield, the Company’s Vice President - Treasurer, will become the Company’s Chief Financial Officer effective upon Mr. Frye’s retirement.

Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. Announces Unaudited Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended March 31, 2015; Provides Capital Expenditure Guidance for the Full Year 2015 and Earnings Guidance for the Second Quarter of 2015

Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. announced unaudited earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2015. For the period, the company’s revenue was $696.2 million, a 12.2% increase from $620.3 million for the first quarter of 2014. Net income grew 36.3% to $62.5 million from $45.9 million for the first quarter of 2014. Earnings per diluted share increased 37.7% to $0.73 for the first quarter of 2015 from $0.53 for the comparable prior-year quarter. The company's revenue growth for the first quarter of 2015 was largely attributable to an 11.4% increase in LTL tons per day as compared to the same quarter last year, which reflected a 13.5% increase in LTL shipments partially offset by a 1.8% decline in LTL weight per shipment. Operating income was $103.565 million compared to $80.052 million a year ago. Income before income taxes was $101.830 million compared to $77.234 million a year ago. Capital expenditures for the first quarter of 2015 were $72.2 million. The company continues to expect capital expenditures for 2015 to total $463.3 million, including planned expenditures of $164.7 million for real estate and service center expansion projects, $271.8 million for tractors, trailers and other equipment and $26.8 million for technology and other assets. After anticipated asset sales, the company expects total net CapEx of approximately $458 million. And the company plans to fund primarily through operating cash flow as well as available borrowing capacity if necessary. Second quarter of 2015, assuming normalized sequential trends, the company expects LTL tonnage per day to increase in the range of 9% to 10% compared with the second quarter of 2014. The company expects revenue per hundredweight, excluding fuel surcharge, to be in the range of 5.5% to 6.5% for the second quarter compared to the second quarter of last year. The company expects an effective tax rate of 38.6% also for the second quarter of 2015.
