Charlie Gay Joins Natcore Technology Inc. Advisory Board

Charlie Gay the former Director of the National Renewable Energy Lab and president/CEO of Siemens Solar Industries has joined the science advisory board of Natcore Technology Inc. Charlie has 41 years of professional management, manufacturing and advanced technology experience in renewable energy and photovoltaics. As creator of the Greenstar Foundation, he has also worked to apply energy, water and information technology to improve people's lives in developing regions around the world.

Natcore Technology Inc. and Eurotron B.V. Sign Joint Development Agreement

Natcore Technology Inc. has signed a joint development agreement with Eurotron B.V. The collaboration has three primary objectives: to adapt Natcore's laser process to a contact design that is compatible with Eurotron's back contact technology; to enable Natcore to incorporate six-inch cells into commercial-style modules, using both its own technology and Eurotron's Backcontact Module technology; to explore possibilities for further cooperation wherein Natcore would commercialize Eurotron's Backcontact Module technology as it may be used in conjunction with Natcore's laser-based technology on a new cell design. Joint work will be performed in the Eurotron Competence Center, a facility opened in May 2014 to provide lab-to-fab testing and pre-production services for solar cell/module technologies. The Competence Center is said to be the first in the world dedicated to back-contact cell/module technologies. Once Natcore has optimized their technology on a small scale, they will produce prototype six-inch demonstration cells for delivery to Eurotron.

Natcore Technology Inc. Produces an All-Back-Contact Silicon Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin Layer Solar Cell

Scientists working in the Rochester R&D Center of Natcore Technology Inc. have produced an all-back-contact silicon "HIT-structure" (heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer) solar cell using their proprietary laser technology. "Silicon HIT-structure cells have been shown to yield record efficiencies of greater than 25%," says Dr. David Levy, Natcore's Director of Research and Technology. "Natcore's HIT-structure cells are made using thin amorphous silicon layers in combination with a standard crystalline silicon solar wafer. This concept makes very efficient cells, as seen in the Sanyo/Panasonic HITTM cell." Natcore's scientists used a laser in applying contacts to the rear of the cell. In addition to further increasing cell efficiency relative to industry standards, the Natcore all-back-contact technique could allow production of these high efficiency cells at low cost. Panasonic recently reported an all-back-contact HIT-structure with 25.6% conversion efficiency. That cell, however, was produced using a relatively complicated, higher-cost process. Natcore believes that it can achieve similar efficiencies at a much lower cost and without the environmental damage incurred through the chemicals and energy required for the high-temperature process. Because of their initial results, Natcore has moved to protect its new process by filing a provisional patent application titled with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
