The company offers a portfolio of life products, such as universal life insurance, interest-sensitive whole life, and traditional products comprising term insurance coverage; and annuity products, including flexible premium and single premium deferred annuities, equity-indexed annuities, and single premium immediate annuities. It also engages in small real estate, nursing home, and other investment activities. The company markets and distributes its insurance products primarily through independent national marketing organizations. National Western Life Insurance Company was founded in 1956 and is based in Austin, Texas.

National Western Life Insurance Company Announces Unaudited Consolidated Earnings Results for the Second Quarter and Six Months Ended June 30, 2015

National Western Life Insurance Company announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported net earnings of $28.8528 million, or $8.16 per diluted Class A common share, compared with consolidated net earnings of $29.183 million, or $8.26 per diluted Class A common share, for the second quarter of 2014. Revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2015, excluding realized and unrealized gains and losses on index options and investments, increased to $159.7 million from $158.5 million in the second quarter of 2014 principally due to gains in universal life contract revenues and net investment income. The Company reported earnings from operations, excluding net realized gains and losses on investments, of $26.1 million for the three months ended June 30, 2015, or $7.38 per diluted Class A common share, compared to $27.2 million, or $7.69 per diluted Class A common share, in the same period for 2014. Net earnings attributable to Class A shares were $3.436 million compared to $3.435 million for the same period a year ago. For the six months, the company reported consolidated net earnings of $50.184 million, or $14.19 per diluted Class A common share, compared with $49.009 million, or $13.86 per diluted Class A common shares, a year ago. The company's book value per share increased to $437.86 as of June 30, 2015 from $436.35 at March 31, 2015. Total revenues were $303.108 million compared to $364.844 million for the same period a year ago. Earnings from operations were $46.781 million compared to $46.033 million for the same period a year ago. Net earnings attributable to Class A shares were $3.436 million compared to $3.435 million for the same period a year ago.

National Western Life Insurance Company Adds Living Benefit Riders to Term Products

National Western Life Insurance Company announced that it has added a suite of Accelerated Death Benefit Riders to its term product series, NWL Term and NWL Secure Term. The riders, generally known as Living Benefits, provide an advance of the death benefit for terminal illness, chronic illness and critical illness. For those who qualify, the rider can accelerate a lump sum benefit payment of up to 90% of the Face Amount of the policy, less an actuarial discount determined by the Company, and less an administrative fee (other terms and conditions apply). The amount of the actuarial discount is based on the age and severity of the applicable terminal illness, chronic illness or critical illness. NWL Term and NWLSecure Term are level term insurance products with guaranteed premiums for 10, 15, 20 or 30 years.

National Western Life Insurance Company Announces Management Changes

The board of directors of National Western Life Insurance Company appointed Ross R. Moody as President and Interim Chief Executive Officer of the company. Mr. Moody has served as a member of the company’s board of directors since 1981 and as the company’s president and chief operating officer since 1992. Mr. Moody will serve as the company’s interim chief executive officer until the company appoints a permanent chief executive officer. Mr. Moody will not receive any additional compensation while assuming the duties of interim chief executive officer. Robert L. Moody, who served as chief executive officer until June 19, 2015, will continue to serve as chairman of the board.
