Northrop Grumman Corporation Announces Earnings Results for the Second Quarter of 2015; Revises Earnings Guidance for the Full Year 2015

Northrop Grumman Corporation announced earnings results for the second quarter of 2015. For the quarter, the company reported lower sales from most of its businesses, but the aerospace unit, its largest, had a small increase in revenue and a bigger profit compared to last year. The company announced that its net income rose 4% to $531 million, or $2.74 per share. Excluding costs related to a pension plan contribution, the company said it earned $2.47 per share. Its revenue fell 2% to $5.9 billion. Revenue from its aerospace business inched up to $2.51 billion, but it reported reduced revenue from its electronic systems, information systems and technical service divisions. Earnings per share increased 16%. Cash from operations and free cash flow were also higher in the second quarter. Through June 30, 2015 adjusting for the first quarter pension prefunding, the company’s operations generated about $300 million in cash compared to $170 million last year. Strong performance from all four of its sectors combined to generate strong segment operating margin. Second quarter free cash flow was $511 million after capital investments of $115 million. For the full year, based on the strength of year-to-date results, the company is raising its EPS and cash guidance. The company now expects 2015 earnings per share of $9.55 to $9.70, above its previous estimate of $9.40 to $9.60 per share. In light of the prevailing budget uncertainty and the likelihood for a continuing resolution in its fourth quarter, the company is maintaining its sales guidance of $23.4 billion to $23.8 billion. While its year-to-date total operating margin rate was 13.4%, the company is maintaining its guidance of mid-12% for the year due to anticipated changes in its tax methods for federal taxation. While the methods change shift taxable income into the future and possibly impacts its 2015 cash guidance, it negatively impacts its 2015 P&L in two ways: first, it results in a nonrecurring increase to unallocated state taxes of around $45 million. Most of that will likely flow through its third quarter unallocated corporate expenses. As a result, the company expects unallocated corporate expense of about $200 million for the full year 2015. The methods change will also move its effective tax rate higher in the second half of the year and closer to the statutory rate due to lower deductions for domestic production activities. As a result, the company expects an effective tax rate of approximately 32% for year 2015. The company is also increasing the guidance for cash from operations and free cash flow. Excluding after-tax discretionary pension contributions, the company now expects cash from operations will range between $2.6 billion and $2.8 billion and free cash flow will range between $1.9 billion and $2.1 billion.
