New Mountain Finance Corporation is a Business Development Company specializing in investments in middle market companies and debt securities at various levels of the capital structure, including first and second lien debt, unsecured notes, bonds, and mezzanine securities. It invests in various industries that include software, education, business services, distribution and logistics, federal services, healthcare services and products, healthcare facilities, energy, media, consumer and industrial services, healthcare Information Technology, Information Technology and services, specialty chemicals and materials, telecommunication, retail, and power generation. It seeks to invest in United States. It typically invests between $10 million and $50 million. Within middle market it seeks to invest in companies having EBITDA between $20 million and $200 million. It prefers to invest in equity interests, such as preferred stock, common stock, warrants, or options received in connection with its debt investments and directly in the equity of private companies. The fund makes investments through both primary originations and open-market secondary purchases. It invests primarily in debt securities that are rated below investment grade and have contractual unlevered returns of 10% to 15%. The firm may also invest in distressed debt and related opportunities and prefers to invest in targets having private equity sponsorship. It seeks to hold its investments between five years and ten years.

New Mountain Finance Corporation reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2014. The company reported net investment income of $20,800,000, net increase in net assets resulting from operations of $7,411,000 or $0.14 per diluted share against net investment income of $10,803,000, net increase in net assets resulting from operations of $17,467,000 or $0.46 per diluted share a year ago. Pro forma adjusted net investment income for the quarter ended September 30, 2014, was $0.35 per share. The company earned total investment income of approximately $34.7 million. This represents an increase of $1 million or 3% from the prior quarter, largely attributable to an increase in interest income from a larger asset base, offset by a modest decrease in prepayment fees. The third quarter adjusted NII of $18.1 million. For the nine months, the company reported net investment income of $54,147,000, net increase in net assets resulting from operations of $54,521,000 or $1.05 per diluted share against net investment income of $35,695,000, net increase in net assets resulting from operations of $43,975,000 or $1.40 per diluted share a year ago. At September 30, 2014, net asset value per share was $14.33, a decrease of $0.32 from June 30, 2014, or a decrease of $0.20 from June 30, 2014 adjusting for the special dividend of $0.12 per share paid during the third quarter. The company's book value on September 30, 2014 was $14.33 per share, which is down $0.20 from last quarter after adjusting for the recent $0.12 special dividend.
