Mothercare plc operates as a specialist multi-channel retailer, franchisor, and wholesaler of products for mothers-to-be, babies, and children under the Mothercare and Early Learning Centre brands. The company operates in two segments, UK and International. It provides clothing for children; home and travel products, which include pushchairs, car seats, furniture, bedding, and feeding and bathing equipment; and toys for babies. The company sells its products through store and wholesale operations, and catalogue and Web sales in the United Kingdom; and through franchise and wholesale operations in the Middle East and Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. As of October 27, 2014, it operated 1,500 stores in 60 countries. The company was founded in 1961 and is headquartered in Watford, the United Kingdom.

Mothercare Announces Executive Changes

Mothercare has unveiled a restructured executive team, which includes the promotion of Matt Stringer to chief operating officer and the hire of Shop Direct's Gary Kibble, as it prepares to become a digitally-led business. Kibble, formerly director of business transformation at Shop Direct, will join the kidswear and maternity specialist on March 23 as group brand and marketing director. In the newly created role, he will be responsible for the modernisation of the Mothercare and Early Learning Centre brands, overseeing all ecommerce activity. Sarah Purkis will join on the same day as group HR director, tasked with leading the group's global training and development programme. She is currentlychief people officer of World Duty Free Group and has previously held senior roles at Virgin Retail. Richard Smothers, who spent 14 years at Tesco, will commence his role as chief financial officer the same day. He replaces Matt Smith, who left the company to join Debenhams. In addition to the new hires, Matt Stringer, previously UK commercial director, has been appointed chief operating officer and Karl Doyle, previously group merchandising director has been appointed group buying and merchandising director. Both Jerry Cull and Tim Ashby will continue in their current roles as international managing director and group general counsel and company secretary respectively.

Mothercare plc announced trading update for the thirteen weeks and forty one weeks ended January 10, 2015. For the thirteen weeks, the company reported its total group sales decreased 2.9% and worldwide sales increased 2.2%. The company reported international double-digit growth with constant currency sales up 14.4% and space up 11.5%. As expected, currency devaluation has impacted reported retail sales growth. UK like-for-like sales up 1.1% with total UK sales down 1.9% despite space being down 4.2%. For the forty one weeks, the company reported its total group sales decreased 1.6% and worldwide sales increased 0.3%. International retail sales in constant currencies increased 12.6%, international retail sales in actual currencies increased 1.3%. Total UK sales decreased 1.4%.
