Marvell Unveils ZigBee Wireless Microcontroller SoC to Advance Smart Home and IoT Innovations

Marvell announced its next-generation 88MZ300 802.15.4/ZigBee wireless microcontroller system-on-chip (SoC), the newest member of Marvell's wireless microcontroller family of Internet of Things solutions. The high-performance, low-power, cost-effective SoC offers superior radio frequency (RF) performance that more than doubles the transmission range and reduces power consumption by 50% over Marvell's previous generation 88MZ100 SoC, while maintaining the least amount of external components due to the high integration in silicon. Together with its support for open standards, including the upcoming ZigBee 3.0 and Thread [2] protocols, the 88MZ300 SoC, along with a ZigBee to Wi-Fi bridge reference design and an ecosystem of hardware manufacturers and system integration partners, it enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to rapidly bring new, innovative IoT applications to market. The 88MZ300 SoC is sampling now. Building upon Marvell's successful 88MZ100 ZigBee wireless microcontroller, the 88MZ300 includes execute in place (XIP) that allows code execution directly from flash memory, reducing system cost while enabling scalable memory architecture for large code applications and future software upgrades. This benefits OEMs who are designing with the evolving protocol standards. It delivers ultra-low power consumption with 8.5 milliampere (mA) receiving (RX) current and 1microampere (uA) standby current, works with an ultra-wide range of power supplies from 1.8 to 3.6 volts (V), allowing for a small form factor battery while providing extended battery life. Moreover, it offers industry-best co-existence performance with 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (BT), significantly improves data link quality with reduced message loss and in turn enhances user experience. The 88MZ300 based IoT solution not only offers industry proven robust network stacks based on open standards, it also offers turnkey hardware designs that are compatible with Marvell's Smart Home Cloud Center platform and Kinoma software. Key features include: 120dBm link-budget with 13dBm integrated PA and -107dBm receiving sensitivity. Best-in-class Wi-Fi coexistence performance with 56dBc WiFi ACI. 26mA transmitting current at 13dBm, 8.5mA receiving current and 1uA standby with memory retention. On-chip 512kB Flash and 164.5kB SRAM. QFN-32 package measures at 5mm by 5mm. Typical applications/markets include: Connected lighting, Smart appliances, Sensors, Home/building automation, Retailer electronic shelf labels (ESL), Remote controllers, Industrial controls. Marvell will be launching the 88MZ300 at the Lightfair International in New York, NY, May 5-7, 2015.

Marvell Partners with Celeno Communications to Provide Wireless Video Solution

Celeno Communications and Marvell announced a partnership that will see Marvell’s ARMADA 1500 family of multi-media processors and connectivity solution combined with Celeno’s 802.11ac Access Point chips to power a wireless video experience in the home that can reliably handle 4K or HD video streaming alongside regular data applications. This combined solution is designed to meet the growing demand for linear TV, Video-on-Demand and OTT services to multiple screens and mobile devices throughout the home, all while ensuring the high levels of reliability and performance. The Celeno CL2348 802.11ac Wave 2 chip and the CL2330 802.11ac chip provide a powerful access point technology in the home gateway. Utilizing Celeno’s concurrent dual band Wi-Fi module, the Gateway will be able to stream high-quality video using both the 2.4GHz and uncongested 5GHz bands. Marvell’s ARMADA 1500 family of multi-media processors will power set top boxes, TVs and 4K platforms, leveraging the company’s Qdeo™ video processing, TV tuner, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity chip to ensure a robust video connection. Celeno’s chips also include Celeno’s airtime management technology OptimizAIR 2.0, which will enable the separation of multiple concurrent video and data streams as well as ensure the higher capacity and superlative QoS required for 4K as compared to HD streaming. With OptimizAIR 2.0, Service Providers can virtualize their Wi-Fi Access Point into multiple portioned networks. For example, STBs powered by the ARMADA 1500 will be put on one virtual Wi-Fi network with guaranteed capacity for multiple 4K HD streams, while other consumer devices will be allocated to a separate network ensuring user experience is satisfied across all devices.

Marvell Extends Lead in Android Set-Top Box Segment with Launch of ARMADA 1500 Ultra Platform for 4K Entertainment

Marvell added the ARMADA 1500 Ultra (88DE3218) system-on-chip (SoC) to its ARMADA 1500 family. The ARMADA 1500 Ultra's Quad Core 14K DMIPS ARM A53 CPU, 8-core GPU, carrier-grade security and power management techniques are designed to enable PayTV operators and set-top box (STB) manufacturers to cost-effectively deliver small form factor devices with 4K entertainment and gaming services to their subscribers. With its 64-bit ARM CPU, Marvell is the first silicon provider to bring the 64-bit ARM architecture both to the mobile and the payTV segments, thereby enabling the unification of the application developer ecosystem.
