Morningstar Announces Executive Appointments

Morningstar announced that Daniel Needham, CFA, has been appointed president and chief investment officer (CIO) for the Morningstar Investment Management group, reporting to Joe Mansueto, chairman and chief executive officer for Morningstar Inc., effective Feb. 2. Needham, who served as CIO for the firm's Investment Management group, is currently based in London and will relocate to Morningstar's Chicago headquarters later this year. Thomas Idzorek, CPA, CFA, who has served as president of the Morningstar Investment Management group since 2013, is taking on a new role as head of investment methodology and economic research for Morningstar. Needham previously served as managing director and CIO for Morningstar Investment Management's Asia-Pacific operations. Jeffrey Ptak, CFA, will become head of global manager research, replacing Scott Burns, who was recently named head of asset management client solutions. Ptak has served as president and chief investment officer of Morningstar Investment Services for the past six years and will transition into his new research role by the end of the first quarter. Other senior leaders will assume Ptak's day-to-day responsibilities for Morningstar Investment Services, an investment unit that provides managed portfolio services through fee-based, independent financial advisors. Before taking on his current role, Ptak served as Morningstar's director of ETF analysis, editor of Morningstar ETFInvestorSM, and an equity analyst. Rob Pinkerton has been appointed chief marketing officer (CMO), a new role for Morningstar, reporting to Mansueto. Pinkerton joined Morningstar through its June 2014 acquisition of HelloWallet, a provider of online financial wellness, where he serves as its CMO. Before joining HelloWallet in 2012, Pinkerton served in executive marketing and product roles with Adobe Systems, LexisNexis, and Siebel Systems (which was acquired by Oracle).
FolioDynamix, Inc. Selects Morningstar Portfolio Tools for its Wealth Management Technology Platform

FolioDynamix announced the addition of Morningstar® Portfolio X-Ray® and Portfolio Comparison tools to its wealth management platform. FolioDynamix has incorporated the Morningstar tools into its proposal generation engine to enhance advisors’ ability to quickly and easily evaluate their clients’ investment portfolios by running side-by-side comparison reports of various portfolio allocation options. FDx Propose, the client investment proposal generation and investment policy statement (IPS) management component of the FolioDynamix technology platform, allows advisors to accelerate individual and household-level investment proposal generation through a web-based interface. It includes the ability to customize model, program and product selections, choose flexible or fixed investment proposal generation paths, incorporate custom risk tolerance questionnaires and present multiple investment programs in a single proposal. The offering brings together Morningstar’s portfolio analysis and comparison tools, Portfolio X-Ray and Portfolio Comparison, with FolioDynamix FDx Propose, giving financial advisors on-demand access to the powerful combination of two market-leading solutions. Now, advisors will be able to view the aggregate portfolio-level data and compare key metrics between two different portfolios. Direct comparisons make it easier to communicate the merits of one portfolio over another to investors.
Morningstar Investment Management Group Appoints Daniel Needham as President and Chief Investment Officer

Morningstar Inc. announced that Daniel Needham, CFA, has been appointed President and Chief Investment Officer of the Morningstar Investment Management group, effective February 2, 2015. He previously served as Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer, Asia-Pacific, where he led the firm’s research, asset allocation, and portfolio management capabilities. Currently based in London, Needham will relocate to Chicago later in 2015.
