BMW selects MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport Tires for New X5 M and X6 M Models

Michelin has announced that BMW AG has selected MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tires for its new X5 M and X6 M models. From its market launch in early 2015, the BMW X5 M and X6 M fitted with the optional 21-inch forged alloy wheels, will be equipped exclusively with MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tires. The 285/35ZR21 105Y front and 325/30ZR21 108Y rear ultra-high-performance tires feature a number of Michelin technologies including multi-compound tread and Variable Contact Patch 2.0. During this development phase around 1,400 prototype tires and 500 pre-production tires were produced and tested to ensure the tires delivered the performance characteristics demanded by the BMW engineers. Originally developed for endurance race tires, multi-compound technology uses different rubber compounds on the left and right sides of the tread. The outer shoulder provides exceptional grip and wear resistance during cornering, intermediate ribs are optimised for steering and handling and the inner shoulder is designed to break through water and provide grip on wet roads. The innovative feature of the Variable Contact Patch 2.0 is that it changes shape depending on real-time driving conditions, thereby guaranteeing total vehicle control. In this way, even as the patch's shape changes when cornering, the amount of rubber in contact with the road remains the same. The combination of these technologies means the MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tires achieves a unique balance between grip, comfort, safety and driving enjoyment that meets BMW M's exacting standards and makes it suitable for everyday road use as well as on the racetrack in demanding conditions - should the need arise.

Porsche Selects MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 Tires for New 911 GT3 RS

Michelin has announced that Porsche AG has selected MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires for its new 911 GT3 RS. Blurring the line between motorsport and road tires, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 is the latest generation of road-legal track tires specially designed for ultra-high performance cars that are used on road and track. The trust that Porsche has in the performance of this tire is clearly demonstrated by the fact that it is also the OE fitment on other recent models including the 918 Spyder, Cayman GT4 and 911 GT3. The co-development of these tires began with the ones that are fitted to the 918 Spyder and these were then developed and fine-tuned to suit the characteristics demanded by Porsche engineers for the track-focussed GT3 RS. Using tire sizes that are larger than those fitted to the GT3 means that the size of the contact patch of the tires is increased by 20% at the front and 18% at the rear.
