Markel Corporation Announces Earnings Results for the Second Quarter and Six Months Ended June 30, 2015

Markel Corporation announced earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported book value per common share outstanding of $554.97 at June 30, 2015, up 2% from $543.96 at December 31, 2014. Comprehensive loss to shareholders was $132.9 million for the second quarter of 2015 compared to comprehensive income to shareholders of $250.6 million for the second quarter of 2014. Diluted net income per share was $6.72 for the quarter ended June 30, 2015 compared to $2.66 for the second quarter of 2014. For the six months, comprehensive income to shareholders was $148.9 million for the six months ended June 30, 2015 compared to $480.9 million for the same period of 2014. Diluted net income per share was $20.21 for the six months ended June 30, 2015 compared to $8.91 for the same period of 2014. The company's total operating revenues grew 4% to $2.6 billion from $2.5 billion a year ago. This increase was driven by higher revenues from Markel Ventures. Gross written premiums were $2.5 billion compared to $2.7 billion a year ago, a decrease of 7%, driven by a decline within Reinsurance segment. Net written premiums were $2.1 billion, down 7% from the prior year. EBITDA was $47 million compared to $35 million a year ago. Net investment income increased to $183 million compared to $179 million a year ago. The increase in net investment income in 2015 was primarily due to increased dividend income on equity portfolio due to higher equity holdings in 2015 compared to 2014. Net income to shareholders of $282 million compared to $128 million a year ago. Net cash provided by operating activities was $238 million, flat to the same period a year ago.

Wilkinson to Become Markel's Singapore Claims Director

Starting in August, Wilkinson will become the first point of contact for all Markel claims via the insurer's offices in Hong Kong, Labuan and Singapore; he will continue to be based in Singapore. He had moved to Asia in July 2013 from Australia to help grow Triton's business in the region. Before joining Triton six years ago, Wilkinson had worked for 10 years as a senior in-house counsel and as a solicitor in a private practice.
