It operates in six segments: Retail; Group, Voluntary & Worksite Benefits; Corporate Benefit Funding; Latin America; Asia; and Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The company provides variable, universal, term, and whole life products; individual disability income products; personal lines property and casualty insurance, including private passenger automobile, homeowners, and personal excess liability insurance; and variable and fixed annuities for asset accumulation and distribution needs, as well as mutual funds and other securities products. It also offers group insurance products, such as variable, universal, and term life products; dental, group short- and long-term disability, and accidental death and dismemberment coverages; and voluntary and worksite products consisting of personal lines property and casualty insurance, as well as LTC, prepaid legal plans, and critical illness products. In addition, the company provides annuity and investment products comprising guaranteed interest products and other stable value products, income annuities, and separate account contracts for the investment management of defined benefit and defined contribution plan assets; and structured settlements and products to fund postretirement benefits and company-, bank- or trust-owned life insurance, as well as health insurance, group medical, credit insurance, endowment, retirement, and savings products. It serves individuals and corporations, as well as other institutions and their employees. The company sells its products through sales forces, third-party organizations, independent agents, and property and casualty specialists, as well as through career agency, bancassurance, direct marketing, brokerage, and e-commerce channels. MetLife, Inc. was founded in 1863 and is based in New York, New York.

MetLife, Inc. announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for first quarter ended March 31, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported total operating revenues of $17,032 million, operating earnings before provision for income tax of $2,262 million, operating earnings of $1,668 million, operating earnings available to common shareholders of $1,638 million, income from continuing operations, net of income tax of $2,163 million, net income available to company's common shareholders of $2,128 million compared to the total operating revenues of $17,116 million, operating earnings before provision for income tax of $2,196 million, operating earnings of $1,592 million, operating earnings available to common shareholders of $1,562 million, income from continuing operations, net of income tax of $1,342 million, net income available to company's common shareholders of $1,298 million for the same quarter a year ago. Book value per common share - tangible common stockholders' equity (excludes AOCI other than FCTA) was $41.32 compared to the $37.76 as on March 31, 2014. MetLife’s operating return on equity (ROE), excluding accumulated other comprehensive income (AOCI) other than foreign currency translation adjustments (FCTA), was 11.7% for the first quarter of 2015 and the company’s tangible operating ROE was 14.4%.

MetLife, Inc. Files Certificate of Amendment to its Amended and Restated Certificate of Incorporation

On April 29, 2015, MetLife, Inc. filed a Certificate of Amendment to its Amended and Restated Certificate of Incorporation with the Secretary of State of Delaware. The stockholders approved the Charter amendment at the company's annual meeting of stockholders on April 28, 2015. The Charter amendment permits the Company's stockholders to amend certain provisions of the Charter by the affirmative vote of a majority of outstanding stock entitled to vote generally in the election of Directors. The amendment to the Charter also permits the Company's stockholders to amend the Company's Amended and Restated By-Laws (the By-Laws) by the affirmative vote of a majority of the Outstanding Stock.
