Target Corp. and MasterCard Settles Lawsuit

Target and MasterCard announced the $19 million deal to settle lawsuits stemming from the retailer's pre-Christmas 2013 data breach has been scrapped, because it didn't get enough support from banks and credit unions. Under the settlement announced last month, Target Corp. agreed to set aside $19 million for banks and credit unions that had issued MasterCards swept up in the breach that compromised 40 million credit and debit card accounts. Banks and credit unions would have been able to use the money to cover related operating costs and fraud-related losses. But the settlement needed 90% of the issuers to accept the offer in order for it to go into effect.

Bank of India, MasterCard Launch New Products to Enhance Payments Experience for Consumers

Bank of India (BOI) and MasterCard announced the launch of its unique card programs namely the Bank of India Business Debit MasterCard, Platinum Credit MasterCard and International Travel MasterCard to further enrich their customer's payment experiences. They have also signed an in principle agreement to offer an innovative range of banking solutions namely In Control for Spend Management andMasterCard Rewards Program which will cater to the ever-evolving digital needs of consumers. The Bank of India Business Debit MasterCard will help businesses better manage expenses and move beyond cheques and petty cash, thus increasing purchasing flexibility, convenience, and safety. Similarly, the Bank of India Platinum Credit MasterCard could be used for everyday purchases to help consumers monitor and control expenses. Travelling is now made even more safe, secure and convenient through the launch of the Bank of India International Travel Card. Available in dual currency (USD & GBP), it can be used everywhere MasterCard is accepted across the globe. In Control for Spend Management is a solution which enables cardholders to manage their finances more efficiently and spend with greater confidence and control. Primary cardholders are provided with an interface whereby they can set real-time alerts for particular types of transactions such as large, international or card-not-present purchases. The MasterCard Rewards Program is a merchant-funded loyalty program which will allow BOI's MasterCard Platinum card cardholders to earn up to 5% of their spends at participating retail and e-commerce merchant establishments as 'MasterCard Rewards'. The accrued points can subsequently be redeemed across a range of exciting redemption options. MasterCard Rewards will be made available as a feature on BOI's newly launched MasterCard card programs with an aim to drive cardholder spend and help the bank acquire, retain and grow their best customers.

MasterCard Offers US Small Businesses Assistance with Chip Card Technology

MasterCard announced that it has introduced Chip360o to assist the nine million US small businesses that are preparing for EMV or chip card technology. Chip 360o aims to communicate actionable information, educate on steps to take and advocate why the change is needed to protect cardholders. EMV is a global standard for authenticating credit and debit card transactions to help minimize counterfeit fraud. Microchips or chips embedded in the card face 'talk' with chips in payment terminals or ATMs creating unique codes for each transaction. The unique codes make the cards almost impossible to copy or counterfeit.
