Imagination Technologies Announces New Area-Optimized PowerVR GPU

Imagination Technologies announced a new area-optimized PowerVR GPU designed to drive high-quality graphics with full OpenGL ES 3.0 functionality into low-cost and space-constrained devices. Imagination customers creating products such as entry-level smartphones, wearables and IoT devices with displays (smartwatches, appliances, connected radios), and in-dash screens in entry-level cars and other vehicles, can now use the industry's highest-quality, most efficient GPUs to create compelling GUIs and user experiences. The new PowerVR G6020 GPU has been specially designed for graphics efficiency in ultra-compact silicon area, obtaining better real device performance and compatibility without unnecessary overhead. It is the smallest member of the PowerVR Series6XE family, with four arithmetic logic unit (ALU) cores and a silicon footprint of 2.2mm2 (28nm process technology at 400MHz). To enable this, the G6020 features a highly optimized universal shading cluster (USC) engine designed specifically for UI experiences. Specially configured to enable the optimal feature set in the smallest possible area and power envelope, the new USC is completely compatible with other Rogue USCs. Designed to deliver a smooth user experience for high-definition displays (720p at 60fps) the G6020 features full OpenGL ES 3.0 capability, providing the optimal feature set needed to meet next-generation requirements for a range of devices. The new G6020 is a key member of the Rogue product line-up that features an OpenGL ES 3.0 feature set and compatibility across the range for easy software development, enabling customers to build an entire product line based on Rogue from the entry level to the high end.

Imagination Technologies Announces New PowerVR HEVC IP Family

Imagination Technologies announces a new PowerVR High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) IP family designed to provide the quality H.265 encoding, while optimizing silicon area and bandwidth usage. This multi standard encoder also offers high-quality H.264 encoding for compatibility with the huge range of AVC (Advanced Video Coding) decoders. PowerVR Series5 video encoders are ideal for applications requiring a flexible encoder able to offer a choice of resolution and bitrate support at the quality, covering markets from 720p at the rate of 30fps to 4K at the rate of 60fps and beyond. The first three IP cores in the new series include encoders optimized for high-efficiency mass market, high-performance mainstream mobile and ultra-high definition (UHD) content creation. HEVC/H.265 video compression technology is designed to deliver video quality comparable to content encoded in the current AVC/H.264 standard, at approximately half the bitrate – critical for transmission of HD and UHD video content over today's limited bandwidth connections. The new Series5 encoders are designed to deliver all the key benefits of HEVC in terms of quality and bitrate reduction relative to H264. In addition, the architecture features advanced search algorithms, a full toolset implementation and optimized rate control algorithms which enable the PowerVR solution to require typically 30% fewer bits than competing solutions to achieve the same quality. The new encoders are capable of high frame rate encoding up to 1080p at the rate of 240fps, enabling faster than real-time transcoding, slow motion recording and multi-stream encoding.

Green Hills Software and Imagination Technologies Report Expanded Compiler and Tools Support for MIPS CPUs

Green Hills Software and Imagination Technologies announced that the Green Hills tools and compilers now support an expanded range of Imagination's MIPS™ CPU IP. This includes fully optimized support for the microMIPS code compression instruction set architecture (ISA) and support for MIPS Warrior M-class and I-class CPUs -- including key architectural features such as hardware virtualization. The on-going partnership between the two companies will bring support to new and future MIPS CPU cores and architectures. Joint customers will benefit from the collaboration between Imagination and Green Hills Software, as they increase support for Imagination's IP. This year, Green Hills Software will be adding support for the new Imagination 64-bit MIPS I6,400 cores, and anticipates these products to be well received in markets such as storage, networking, digital entertainment, and consumer electronics, as well as any other industry that requires the utmost in reliability and high-productivity tools. Green Hills tools and compilers for MIPS, including microMIPS, are available from Green Hills on February 24, and for MIPS 64-bit Warrior cores will be available in the second half of 2015.
